Natural Track Luge World Championship 2009
The 17th FIL Natural Track Luge World Championship took place from February 12th to 15th, 2009 in Moos in Passeier in South Tyrol , Italy . On June 28, 2007, the FIL awarded the world championship to Passeier for the second time and to South Tyrol for the sixth time.
The World Cup began on February 12th with the training runs before the team competition was held on February 13th. The two-seater and single-seater races took place on February 14th. On February 15, the World Championships ended with the third competition in the individual disciplines. The most successful was the Italian federation, which won all four competitions.

The men's single-seater competition was won for the first time by the Italian Patrick Pigneter , having finished third in 2005 and 2007 . At this World Cup it was Pigneter's third victory, as he had already won gold in the doubles and with the team. Thomas Kammerlander from Austria was in the lead after two rounds, but lost 18 hundredths of a second to Patrick Pigneter in the third race and finally came in second, 4 hundredths behind. For him it was the first medal at a World Cup. Bronze went to the Austrian Thomas Schopf . For him it was also the first individual medal, with the team he won silver two days earlier. The defending champion Gernot Schwab finished fifth.

In the women's single-seater, the Italian Renate Gietl won the first two races with best times . It was her first individual title at a World Cup, in 2001 and 2005 she won silver and bronze respectively. Second was the Russian Jekaterina Lavrentjewa , who became world champion in 2005 and 2007 , but this time despite the best time in the third run, she was barely able to catch up on her deficit from the first two runs. Bronze went to the Italian Renate Kasslatter , who won her first World Cup medal.

The two-seater competition was won by the Italians Patrick Pigneter and Florian Clara with best times in both rounds. The second fastest time was achieved by the silver medalists Christian Schopf and Andreas Schopf from Austria and Andrzej Laszczak and Damian Waniczek from Poland won the bronze medal with the third fastest time . For Laszczak / Waniczek it was already the third bronze medal after 2000 and 2005 . The duo Pigneter / Clara won their first two-seater medal, as did the duo Christian and Andreas Schopf. Andreas Schopf was world champion together with Wolfgang Schopf in 2001 and 2003 . The defending champions Pavel Porschnew and Ivan Lazarew finished fourth.

Team Italy I won the team competition with the highest number of points and the fastest overall time (best time in the men's singles and doubles as well as the second-best time in the women’s singles). Silver went to Team Austria I and bronze to Team Russia I, the achieved the fastest time in the women's singles. Fourth place went to Team Italy II, ahead of Team Austria II, which had the same number of points but had a poorer overall time. Italy, Austria and Russia started with two teams each; Bulgaria and Poland with one each. In addition, two mixed teams with tobogganers from two nations took part.
