Christian Schatz (born October 7, 1975 in Wolfsberg , Carinthia ) is an Austrian natural toboggan runner . He starts in the World Cup together with Gerhard Mühlbacher in a two-seater and has won five World Cup races and twice the overall World Cup with him . At the 2007 World Cup , they were world champions in the team competition and third in the doubles; In 2011 they finished second in the team competition. So far, they have won two silver and two bronze medals at European championships .

Career

Schatz started tobogganing in 1983, has participated in competitions since 1984 and has been a member of the Austrian national team since 2000. In 1995 he started at the European Junior Championships in Saint-Marcel / Fénis and achieved 21st place in the singles and sixth place with Christian Rumpf in the doubles. Two years later he took part in the 1997 European Championships in Moos in Passeier , where he and Stefan Karner finished ninth in the doubles. It wasn't until five years later that he took part in a major international event. At the 2002 European Championships in Frantschach-Sankt Gertraud , where Schatz is a member of the local sports club, he achieved 13th place in the single-seater. He only came in 21st place in the single seater at the 2004 European Championships in Hüttau .

From then on, Schatz only started in a two-seater at international level. At the end of the 2004/2005 season he competed in the first World Cup race with Gerhard Mühlbacher , who had previously been active in doubles with Harald Kleinhofer and had already achieved several podium places in the World Cup. You finished fifth. They made their big breakthrough in the next winter . In the second race of the season in Kindberg they celebrated their first victory and after a third and two second places they also won the season finale in Oberperfuss , with which they were overall World Cup winners with 15 points ahead of the Russians Pawel Porschnew and Ivan Lasarew . The 2006 European Championship in Umhausen but won Porschnew / Lazarev, Schatz / Mühlbacher were 1.46 seconds behind in second.

In the 2006/2007 season , Schatz and Mühlbacher achieved two third places in the first three World Cup races. They won the other three races in Umhausen and Moos in Passeier and thus secured victory in the overall double-seater World Cup for the second time ahead of Porschnew and Lasarew, this time with a lead of 30 points. At the 2007 World Cup in Grande Prairie , they won the bronze medal behind Porschnew / Lasarew and another Russian two-seater pair, Alexander Jegorow and Pyotr Popow . The day before, they became world champions in the team competition together with Melanie Batkowski and Gernot Schwab .

The World Cup season 2007/2008 began Schatz / Mühlbacher with three third places, but after that did not come more to the podium and fell behind in the overall standings to fourth. At the European Championships in Olang in 2008 , they missed the medal ranks relatively clearly in fourth place with a gap of 1.89 seconds on the third-placed Jegorow / Popow. With a third place in Unterammergau as the best World Cup result, Schatz / Mühlbacher took sixth place overall in the 2008/2009 season . In the following winter , with a seventh, four fifth and a third place at the World Cup finals in Garmisch-Partenkirchen, they improved by one place to fifth in the overall World Cup. At the 2009 World Championships in Moos in Passeier, they finished seventh in the doubles and fifth with the team. At the 2010 European Championships in St. Sebastian they won the bronze medal in the team competition with Marlies Wagner and Gerald Kammerlander and were eighth in the doubles.

The 2010/2011 season started Schatz / Mühlbacher with a third place in Novouralsk , the other three top 5 results followed before the last two races in Unterammergau and Olang stood in second place on the podium again, making it third overall achieved. At the 2011 World Championships in Umhausen, Schatz / Mühlbacher just missed a medal in the doubles as fourth. They were only four hundredths of a second slower than third-placed Andrzej Laszczak and Damian Waniczek . In the team competition, the duo won the silver medal together with the single-seaters Melanie Batkowski and Gerald Kammerlander. In the 2011/2012 season , Schatz / Mühlbacher achieved third place overall in the two-seater World Cup with four third places as well as a fourth and a seventh place. They also came third at the 2012 European Championships in Nowouralsk, where they also won the silver medal in the team competition with Tina Unterberger and Thomas Schopf .
