Reinhard Beer (born October 2, 1969 in Bad Ischl ) is a former Austrian natural track luge . From 1995 to 2007 he formed one of the most successful two-seater couples with Herbert Kögl . They became world champions once in the doubles and in the team competition and twice won the overall World Cup . With a total of 18 World Cup victories, they are still the two-seater couple with the most World Cup victories .
Career
Beer started in 1986 at the Junior European Championships in a single-seater, achieved fifth place in 1986 and won the silver medal in 1987 . In 1988 he finished sixth in the single-seater and he started together with Herbert Pilz in the two-seater. They won the bronze medal. From 1989 Beer started in the general class at international championships, initially only in single-seater. He was 15th at the European Championships in 1989 and the 1990 World Championships and ninth at the 1991 European Championships . Then he successfully switched to the two-seater. In the World Cup he and Gerhard Pilz achieved their first podium finish at the beginning of the 1994/1995 season with third place in Negaunee . The duo also took third place at the European Cup in Olang .
From the 1995/1996 season, Beer formed a two-seater couple with Herbert Kögl . With Kögl he achieved his breakthrough to the top of the world at the 1996 World Cup in Oberperfuss , when they were world champions in the doubles championship ahead of their fellow countrymen Andi and Helmut Ruetz and the Italians Martin Psenner and Arthur Künig . Before that, they had already achieved two podium places in the World Cup. From the winter of 1996/1997 , the duo was also victorious in the World Cup. They won three out of six World Cup races and thus won the overall World Cup for the first time. They relegated the Austrian successful Rudo Ruetz / Ruetz to second place, which won the overall ranking two years before and two years after. With one exception, due to an injury to Reinhard Beer at the 2001 World Championships, the Beer / Kögl duo consistently ranked among the top three in the overall World Cup for another ten years and were able to repeat their overall victory in the 2004/2005 season. At the European Championships in 1997 in Moos in Passeier , they won the bronze medal.
In the 1997/1998 season, Kögl and Beer won two World Cup races, but fell back to third in the overall World Cup. At the 1998 World Championships in Rautavaara they were also third, but at the 1999 European Championships in Szczyrk they did not finish. In 1998 they became Austrian champions in doubles for the first time. By 2007 they won this title another five times. In the 1998/1999 season , Beer / Kögl achieved second place in the overall World Cup with one win and another four podium places, as well as in the 1999/2000 season , in which they won two races and came second twice. At the 2000 World Cup in Olang they won the silver medal behind the Italians Armin and David Mair , who also won the overall World Cup this winter.
The 2000/2001 World Cup season began with Beer / Kögl with a victory in Umhausen and a second place in Unterammergau . At the 2001 World Championships in mid-January in Stein an der Enns Reinhard Beer seriously injured. In the first decision, the team competition held for the first time, he touched the side of the track and broke his left arm. They had to take a break for the rest of the winter, so they were not at the start of the last two World Cup races, but still finished fourth in the overall World Cup.
In the 2001/2002 season , the Beer / Kögl duo achieved second place in the overall World Cup with a victory in Umhausen and another three podium places, this time behind the Poles Andrzej Laszczak and Damian Waniczek . At the 2002 European Championships in Frantschach-Sankt Gertraud , they came second behind Wolfgang and Andreas Schopf . In the 2002/2003 and 2003/2004 seasons, Beer and Kögl achieved third place in the overall World Cup with one and two wins respectively. At the 2003 World Championships in Železniki , they fell out of the first round after a fall and at the 2004 European Championships in Hüttau they just missed a medal in fourth.
In the 2004/2005 season , Beer and Kögl won the overall double-seater World Cup for the second time after eight years. They won three races and came second twice. They also won the team competition at the 2005 World Cup in Latsch together with Melanie and Robert Batkowski . In the two-seater, however, they passed the podium by 12 hundredths of a second and landed in fourth place. In the 2005/2006 and 2006/2007 seasons, Beer / Kögl achieved third place overall in the World Cup with one victory each. At the 2006 European Championships in Umhausen, however, they only finished seventh. At the 2007 World Cup in Grande Prairie , they finished third in the team competition together with Marlies Wagner and Gerald Kammerlander . In the doubles, however, they remained unsuccessful because they, like three other couples, were disqualified because the rails of their toboggan exceeded the maximum permitted temperature.
Shortly before the start of the 2007/2008 season, Reinhard Beer announced his resignation.
