Gerhard Mühlbacher (born March 13, 1975 in Hallein ) is an Austrian natural track tobogganer who is particularly successful in the two-seater. First he started with Harald Kleinhofer , with whom he achieved a total of eleven podium places in world cup races and third place at the 2003 World Cup . In addition, they were twice Austrian national champions. Since 2005 he and Christian Schatz have formed a two-seater couple. So far, they have won the overall World Cup twice with a total of five World Cup victories , were world champions in team competition in 2007 and won a further seven medals at world and European championships.

Career

Gerhard Mühlbacher starts for the toboggan club in his home town of Golling . At the beginning of his career he was active in both single and doubles. From 1993 to 1995 he took part in three European Junior Championships , in 1993 he only started in the doubles and reached fifth place with Roland Kallan and in 1994 and 1995 only participated in the single, where he was tenth and fourteenth respectively. In the winter of 1997/98 Mühlbacher won the overall European Cup rankings in single and double-seater and he took part in a world championship for the first time in Rautavaara, Finland , where he finished 16th in single-seater and together with Harald Kleinhofer reached fourth place in double-seater.

Two-seater with Harald Kleinhofer (until 2004/2005)

From then on, Mühlbacher concentrated exclusively on the two-seater. With his partner Harald Kleinhofer he formed a successful two-seater couple until 2005, which repeatedly achieved top placings in the World Cup and international championships, but never made it to the top of the podium. They achieved their first podium places in the World Cup in January 2000 when they were third in Garmisch-Partenkirchen and second a week later in Gummer . Another week later, they achieved fifth place at the 2000 World Cup in Olang . In the previous year the Kleinhofer / Mühlbacher doubles were disqualified in the first run at the 1999 European Championships in Szczyrk . In the overall World Cup they only achieved seventh place in the 1999/2000 season because they only took part in one of the three remaining World Cup races after the World Cup, but did not finish. After a long break - they did not take part in the 2001 World Championships either - they did not contest their next World Cup race until February 2001 in Moscow , where they immediately came second again. At the season finale in Hüttau they came fourth and thus ninth in the overall World Cup for the 2000/2001 season . In addition, in 2001 they became Austrian state champions in the doubles for the first time.

In the 2001/2002 World Cup season, Kleinhofer / Mühlbacher first achieved two third places in Olang and then two second places in the parallel competition in Triesenberg and Umhausen , which meant they were now second in the overall ranking. With ranks seven and four in the last two competitions, they fell back to fourth place in the overall World Cup. They also achieved fourth place overall in the following 2002/2003 season . This winter, two third places in Umhausen and Kindberg were her best World Cup results. After Kleinhofer / Mühlbacher came fourth at the 2002 European Championships in Frantschach-Sankt Gertraud again just barely without precious metal, they won the 2003 World Championships in Železniki behind their teammates Wolfgang and Andreas Schopf as well as the Russians Pawel Porschnew and Ivan Lasarew , who this year in Overall World Cup won, the bronze medal. After the first of the two races they were fourth again just behind the medal ranks, but with the second-best run time in the second run they were able to improve to third and thus won their only joint medal at World and European Championships. They were also successful at national level, because in the same year they became Austrian two-seater national champions for the second time.

The 2003/2004 season started Kleinhofer / Mühlbacher with a second place in Olang and third place in Grande Prairie . After that, however, they only achieved two seventh and one eighth place, making them fifth in the overall World Cup. At the 2004 European Championships in Hüttau , their last major joint event, they finished ninth. In the 2004/2005 season they only took part in the two World Cup races in Oberperfuss , where they finished sixth in the first race but were canceled in the second. Harald Kleinhofer then ended his career and Gerhard Mühlbacher has since started with Christian Schatz .

Two-seater with Christian Schatz (from 2004/2005)

Gerhard Mühlbacher and Christian Schatz contested their first joint World Cup race at the end of the 2004/2005 season in Olang, where they achieved fifth place. Before that, they had already started together in the Intercontinental Cup. The next winter they had their big breakthrough when they won two wins in Kindberg and Oberperfuss as well as two second, one third and one fourth place with 15 points ahead of the Russians Pavel Porschnew and Ivan Lasarew - who also won two races - won the overall world cup. At the 2006 European Championships in Umhausen, Porschnew / Lasarew were faster and Schatz / Mühlbacher won the silver medal 1.46 seconds behind. In the 2006/2007 season , Gerhard Mühlbacher and Christian Schatz even won three World Cup races - one in Umhausen and two in Moos in Passeier . In addition, they were twice third and once ninth, which again won the overall World Cup ahead of Pawel Porschnew and Ivan Lazarew, this time with a lead of 30 points. At the 2007 World Championships in Grande Prairie, Schatz / Mühlbacher together with Melanie Batkowski and Gernot Schwab became world champions in the team competition and won the bronze medal in the two-seater behind the two Russian two-seater couples Porschnew / Lasarew and Yegorow / Popow .

The 2007/2008 season started Schatz / Mühlbacher with three third places. In the second half of the season, however, they did not make it onto the podium in any other World Cup races and fell back to fourth place in the overall standings. They also came in fourth at the 2008 European Championships in Olang. In the next two years they only achieved one podium in the World Cup. In the 2008/2009 season this was third place in Unterammergau and in the 2009/2010 season third place at the World Cup finals in Garmisch-Partenkirchen, which brought them to sixth and fifth place in the overall World Cup. At the 2009 World Championships in Moos in Passeier , she was seventh in the doubles and fifth in the team competition with Thomas Kammerlander and Tina Unterberger . At the European Championships 2010 in St. Sebastian Schatz / Mühlbacher only finished eighth in the doubles, but they won the bronze medal in the team competition with Marlies Wagner and Gerald Kammerlander as Team Austria II.

The 2010/2011 season started Schatz / Mühlbacher with a third place in Novouralsk , the other three top 5 results followed before the last two races in Unterammergau and Olang stood in second place on the podium again, making it third overall achieved. At the 2011 World Championships in Umhausen, Schatz / Mühlbacher just missed a medal in the doubles as fourth. They were only four hundredths of a second slower than third-placed Andrzej Laszczak and Damian Waniczek . In the team competition, the duo won the silver medal together with the single-seaters Melanie Batkowski and Gerald Kammerlander. In the 2011/2012 season , Schatz / Mühlbacher achieved third place overall in the two-seater World Cup with four third places as well as a fourth and a seventh place. They also came third at the 2012 European Championships in Nowouralsk, where they also won the silver medal in the team competition with Tina Unterberger and Thomas Schopf .
