Natural Track Luge World Championship 2000

The 12th FIL Natural Track Luge World Championship 2000 took place from January 28th to 30th on the Panorama toboggan run in Olang in South Tyrol , Italy . Italy, Austria and Russia each won one of the three competitions . The most successful nation with a total of four medals was Austria. In addition to these three countries, which had previously won all medals at natural track tobogganing world championships, a medal went to Poland for the first time this year .

The Austrian Gerald Kallan became world champion in the men's single-seater with the fastest time in the first of three rounds . For him it was the first World Cup medal. Second place went to five-time world champion Gerhard Pilz , also from Austria, who, despite the best times in the second and third rounds, was unable to make up the deficit from the first run. Anton Blasbichler from Italy won bronze and with it his third medal at world championships. The defending champion Reinhard Gruber finished fourth.

In the women's single-seater, the Russian Ekaterina Lavrentjewa became world champion for the first time with the best times in all three rounds. With the second best time in each case, Sonja Steinacher from Italy took silver. At the previous World Cup in 1998 , she was already third. The bronze medal went to the Austrian Elvira Holzknecht with the third-best running time. For her, it was the third and last medal at world championships after winning silver in 1992 and 1996 . The defending champion Lyubow Panjutina finished fifth.

The two-seater competition was won by Armin Mair and David Mair from Italy, who were already in the lead after the first of two races. The Austrian two-seater couple Reinhard Beer and Herbert Kögl were able to work their way up to second after finishing fifth in the first run with the fastest time in the second run. The bronze medal went to Andrzej Laszczak and Damian Waniczek , who won the first medal at the natural track luge world championships for Poland.
