The first FIL - natural track luge World Cup took place from January 30 to February 4, 1979 in Inzing in Austria instead.

The first world champion in the men's single-seater was the Austrian Werner Prantl , who also won bronze in the double-seater. Silver went to Damiano Lugon from Italy, who had won the European Championship a few days earlier. The third-placed Italian Erich Graber had already won the European Championship in 1974 and 1977.

The first world title in the women's singles went to the Italian Delia Vaudan , the Austrian Ingrid Zameter won the silver medal . The bronze medalist Roswitha Fischer from Italy had become European champion a few days earlier.

The Italians Damiano Lugon and Andrea Millet , who had won the silver medal at the European Championship shortly before, became world champions in doubles. Last year's European champions, Werner Mücke and Helmut Hutter from Austria came in second . The Austrians Werner - world champion in single-seater - and Florian Prantl , who had won the European Championship a few days earlier, came third.
