Železniki

Železniki (German: Eisnern ) is a municipality in the Gorenjska region in Slovenia .

geography

The municipality of Železniki is located in the Selška valley about 40 km from Ljubljana .

With 30 villages and hamlets, the entire municipality has almost 7,000 inhabitants, 3,156 of whom live in the main town of Železniki (as of the end of 2018).

History, economy, description

In 973 Zelesniki was first mentioned in a document as a place in the domain of Otto II . From the beginning of the 14th century, Zelesniki developed into a settlement center in the valley. The street village along the bank of the river now has a length of around two kilometers.

The inhabitants of the place and the surrounding areas of the settlement operate agriculture and the wood industry (Alples). The best agricultural areas are on the plains of Dolenje vas, Selce and Studena, while farmers in the surrounding villages are increasingly turning to farm tourism and free-range farming due to the scarce arable land and the difficult cultivation.

Železniki blast furnace

In addition, craftsmen and small businesses in the electrical engineering and metal industry settled in Niko, Domel and Libra. The only surviving blast furnace in Slovenia is a visible and now listed testimony to the intensive iron and steel industry in this area . A local museum focuses on the history of iron extraction in this area.

Železniki is also known for its hand-made lace.

There is a primary school in Železniki. A sports hall and a swimming pool are operated.

Natural event

In September 2007, the area around Železniki was badly hit by violent storms and floods. In the main town of Železniki alone, 350 houses were devastated.
