Žirovnica ( German Scheraunitz ) is a municipality in the Upper Carniola in northwestern Slovenia .
The municipality consists of the localities Breg ( Rann ), Breznica (German Bresnitz ), Doslovče, Moste ( stone bridges , older also: Brückl ), Rodine ( Rodein ), Selo pri Žirovnici, Smokuč ( Smokutsch ), Vrba ( Velden ), Zabreznica and Žirovnica ( Scheraunitz ), the largest village in the municipality with 550 inhabitants. The seat of the municipal administration is in Breznica. Žirovnica is located on the upper reaches of the Sava and at the foot of the high chair ( Veliki Stol in Slovenian ) and is therefore a popular starting point for mountain hikes in the Karawanken . There are two hydropower plants in the municipality : one on the Završnica river (completed in 1914) and one on the Sava near Moste (completed in 1952).
Attractions
The parish church of St. Maria from 1819 and the votive church of St. Radegund from 1468 are in Breznica .
The probably oldest church in the municipality is located in Žirovnica itself. The originally Romanesque building was mentioned in a document in 1468, but is much older. In the first half of the 15th century, Gothic elements were added to the presbytery , and in the Baroque period the church was enlarged and a new bell tower was built. In the immediate vicinity of the church, remains from Roman times and Slavic graves from the early Middle Ages were found during archaeological excavations .
The church of St. Markus in Vrba dates from before 1400. The church of St. Clemens in Rodine was originally built in the second half of the 10th century, later destroyed and rebuilt around 1600.
The church in Selo , dedicated to the siblings Cantius, Cantianus and Cantianilla , probably dates from the beginning of the 15th century. The frescoes inside the church were designed in the style of the “ Villach School”, comparable to those in Mariapfarr ( Land Salzburg ) and St. Gandolf an der Glan ( Carinthia ).
In Studenčice there is the Church of St. Florian , which was originally dedicated to St. Rupert and was first mentioned in 1436. There are paintings from the 14th and 15th centuries on the inner and outer facade.
