Gerald Kammerlander (born August 13, 1981 in Zams ) is a former Austrian natural track luge . He has been a member of the Austrian natural track tobogganing team since 2000. His greatest successes to date include the world championship title in the single-seater 2011 , two World Cup victories in the 2008/2009 season and second place in the overall single-seater World Cup in the 2007/2008 season . In 1999 he became junior world champion in doubles. His younger brother Thomas Kammerlander is also a natural track tobogganist.

Life

Kammerlander achieved his first major successes in the winter of 1997/98 when he was overall winner of the Intercontinental Cup in the junior class and together with Joachim Schöpf won the silver medal in the doubles at the 1998 European Junior Championships in Feld am See . The next year he was in Hüttau together with Schöpf Junior World Champion in the two-seater. He won another medal in the junior class with third place in the single seater at the 2001 European Junior Championships in Tiers and in the 2001/2002 season he was the overall winner in the Intercontinental Cup.

In the World Cup , Kammerlander only competes in a single-seater. He contested his first race on December 19, 1999 in Oberperfuss , where he finished ninth. This winter, however, this was his only World Cup race and in the next season he was only used once in the World Cup. Since the 2002/2003 season , Kammerlander has competed regularly in the World Cup and since then he has always been among the top ten in the overall single-seater World Cup. After he came tenth overall in winter 2002/2003 and was ninth in the 2003/2004 and 2004/2005 seasons, he reached seventh in winter 2005/2006 with his first podium, a second place at the start of the season in Longiarü Overall rank.

At the World Championships in 2003 and 2005 , Kammerlander took eleventh place in the single-seater, at the 2004 European Championships he was eighth and at the 2006 European Championships sixth. In addition, he was Austrian national champion in the single seater in 2005. In the 2006/2007 World Cup season, in contrast to the previous winter, Kammerlander did not achieve a podium and fell two places to ninth place in the overall standings. The greatest success of this winter was winning the bronze medal in Team Austria II together with Marlies Wagner , Reinhard Beer and Herbert Kögl at the team competition of the 2007 World Cup in Grande Prairie . In the single-seater, he took seventh place at this event.

In the next two years, Kammerlander achieved his greatest successes in the World Cup: in the 2007/2008 season he took third place in Umhausen and two second places at the end of the season in Železniki behind the superior winner Patrick Pigneter and only one point ahead of the third placed Florian Breitenberger the second place in the single-seater overall world cup. At the beginning of the 2008/2009 season , the 27-year-old celebrated his first two World Cup victories in St. Sebastian and Umhausen, but did not make it into the top ten in the other four races of the season and therefore only achieved fifth place in the overall World Cup.

At World and European Championships, Kammerlander remained without a medal in the single seater. In the 2008 European Championships , he finished eighth and at the 2009 World Championships seventh. At the European Championships 2010 he achieved fifth place in the singles and together with Marlies Wagner, Christian Schatz and Gerhard Mühlbacher won the bronze medal in the team competition, as at the 2007 World Cup. In the World Cup, Kammerlander did not have a top result in the 2009/2010 season . His best result was a sixth place in Latzfons and in the overall World Cup he only achieved twelfth place.

In the 2010/2011 season , Kammerlander remained without a top result in the World Cup. His best result was fifth in Kindberg ; in the overall World Cup, he finished eighth. In contrast, the 2011 World Championship in Umhausen was very successful , where he won the gold medal in the single seater four hundredths of a second ahead of fellow countryman Robert Batkowski . He also achieved second place in the team competition with Melanie Batkowski , Christian Schatz and Gerhard Mühlbacher. In the 2011/2012 season , Kammerlander's best World Cup result was also fifth, but in the overall World Cup he fell back to 13th place. At the 2012 European Championships in Novouralsk , he was 14th in the singles.

In the 2012-2013 season, Kammerlander Gerald ended his career as an active top athlete and switched to the coaching team of the Austrian Luge Association. Since the 2013–2014 season, Kammerlander has been sports director / natural track responsible for the national team in the Austrian Luge Association.
