Michael Scheikl (born May 5, 1989 ) is an Austrian natural track tobogganist . His greatest successes so far are a silver and bronze medal at the 2012 European Championship , a gold and silver medal each at the 2020 European Championship and a silver and bronze medal each at the 2019 Natural Track Luge World Championship , four World Cup victories and second place in the overall World Cup in the season 2019/20.
Career
Scheikl started tobogganing in 1997. Between 2004 and 2005 he participated for the first time at a junior world - or europameisterschaft part, but not yet arrived there in the top ten. In 2005 he became Austrian junior champion in single seater. On December 11, 2005, the then 16-year-old Scheikl made his debut in the World Cup . In the first race of the 2005/2006 season in Longiarü he finished 20th. This was his only World Cup start this winter and next. At the Junior World Championship 2006 in Garmisch-Partenkirchen and at the Junior European Championship 2007 in St. Sebastian , he achieved two top 10 results in seventh and eighth respectively. Scheikl has been back in the World Cup since the 2007/2008 season . He reached his first podium finish on February 23, 2008 in Železniki in third place and achieved ninth place in the overall World Cup that winter. At the Junior World Championships in 2008 in Latsch and at the European Championships in 2008 in Olang , his first title fight in the general class, he only just missed a medal in fourth place.
At the start of the 2008/2009 season , the then 19-year-old Scheikl achieved his first World Cup victory in St. Sebastian, at the same time as Gerald Kammerlander, who was eight years older . The two thus led the first Austrian six-fold victory in the natural track toboggan World Cup. In the rest of the winter, Scheikl did not make it onto the podium and in the overall World Cup he finished fourth at the end of the season. He also came fourth at the 2009 Junior European Championships in Longiarü. At the 2009 World Championships in Moos in Passeier , he finished sixth. In the 2009/2010 season Scheikl did not come close to his previous year's World Cup results. Three ninth places were his best World Cup results, which dropped him to eleventh place in the overall standings. Even at the 2010 European Championships in St. Sebastian, he did not get past ninth place. At the beginning of the 2010/2011 season he achieved his first podium finish in two years with third place in Novouralsk , which was followed by two fifth places. After that, however, his results deteriorated again and he was ninth in the overall World Cup.
After Scheikl did not take part in the 2011 World Cup, he won the silver medal in the single-seater behind the season dominator Patrick Pigneter and the bronze medal in the team competition together with Melanie Batkowski , Christian Schopf and Andreas Schopf at the 2012 European Championship in Nowouralsk . He also performed well in the World Cup in the 2011/2012 season : He finished third in Nova Ponente and Nowouralsk twice on the podium, narrowly missed the podium positions in fourth and, like three years earlier, finished fourth in the overall World Cup - this time as best Austrian behind three Italians.
In addition to natural track tobogganing, Scheikl also takes part in roller- sledging competitions in summer , both in single-seater and in double-seater with Tina Unterberger . He won the overall ranking of the Austrian Roller Luge Cup several times and was Austrian champion several times.
