Renate Gietl (born January 10, 1982 in Brixen ) is a former Italian natural track tobogganist . She was two times world champion in single-seater and in team competition and won the overall world cup in single-seater in the 2004/2005 season . Her older sister Christa was also a natural toboggan runner.

Career

Gietl launched from the 1999/2000 season in the World Cup . In her first season she was able to place herself in the top six in all races and achieved her first podium finish with second place in Stein an der Enns . In the overall World Cup this meant fourth place. In the same year she became Junior European Champion in Umhausen . In the 2000/2001 season , Gietl fell back to 13th place in the overall World Cup with only three top 10 placements. For this she won the silver medal behind her compatriot Sonja Steinacher at the 2001 World Championships in Stein an der Enns, where she also won bronze in the team competition, which was held for the first time, and the silver medal at the European Junior Championships in Tiers .

In the 2001/2002 season Gietl reached her second podium in Umhausen . A week later, on January 20, 2002, she celebrated her first World Cup victory in Hüttau . In the overall ranking she achieved fourth place again. At the junior world championship in Gsies in 2002 Gietl won the bronze medal, but at the European championships in Frantschach she only achieved eighth place. At the beginning of the 2002/2003 season , Gietl celebrated her second World Cup victory in the parallel competition in Völs . After that, however, she did not make it into the top three and she finished sixth in the overall standings, tied with Austrian Marlies Wagner . At the World Cup in 2003 in Železniki , she also only reached sixth place.

With two second places in Moscow and Aurach and three fourth places, Gietl achieved third place overall in the 2003/2004 World Cup season . At the 2004 European Championships in Hüttau , she was seventh behind her World Cup results and for the third time in a row in championships without a medal. Gietl achieved her greatest success in the World Cup in the 2004/2005 season . She won four of the six races of the season and thus for the first and only time in her career the overall World Cup. At the 2005 World Championships in Latsch , she won bronze twice in the singles and with the team.

In the following years Gietl only had to admit defeat to the Russian Ekaterina Lavrentjewa in the overall World Cup. In the 2005/2006 season she reached five podium places and thus behind Lavrentjewa, who won all six races of the season, the second place overall. Gietl achieved one victory each and another four podium places in the 2006/2007 and 2007/2008 seasons, but the Russian woman again secured the overall World Cup. Gietl won the bronze medal at the European Championships in Umhausen in 2006 and in Olang in 2008 . At the 2007 World Cup in Grande Prairie , she was fourth in the singles, just behind the medal ranks, but together with Patrick Pigneter and Florian Clara she won silver in the team competition.

In the 2008/2009 World Cup season , Gietl remained behind the Russian despite three wins, one more than Lavrentieva, and three third places in the overall World Cup. At the 2009 World Championships in Moos in Passeier , Gietl was three hundredths of a second faster than Lavrentieva, making it the single-seater world champion for the first time. Before that she had already won the gold medal in the team competition together with Anton Blasbichler , Patrick Pigneter and Florian Clara.

In the 2009/2010 season , Gietl reached second place in the overall World Cup behind Lavrentieva for the fifth time in a row with two wins, two second and two third places. At the 2010 European Championships in St. Sebastian she won bronze in the singles and silver with the team. In the 2010/2011 season she was first three times third and once second before winning the last two races in front of Jekaterina Lavrentjewa. Since Lavrentjewa had won the first four races, Gietl was again second behind the Russian in the overall World Cup. At the 2011 World Cup in Umhausen , Gietl was able to repeat its double success from two years ago. For the second time she became world champion in singles ahead of Russian Ekaterina Lavrentjewa and for the second time she won the gold medal in the team competition with Anton Blasbichler, Patrick Pigneter and Florian Clara as Team Italy I.

In the 2011/2012 season , Gietl finished second overall with four second and two third places, behind Lavrentieva, who won all six World Cup races of the winter. At the 2012 European Championships in Novouralsk , Gietl narrowly missed a medal in the singles and in the team competition as fourth. In December 2012, shortly before the start of the 2012/2013 World Cup season, Gietl announced her resignation.
