The Austrian Gerhard Pilz , world champion from 1986 to 1996, was European champion for the first time with the best time in the second and third races. He ended the successful streak of the Italians, who had previously been the European champions seven times in a row. In second place was his compatriot Robert Batkowski , who had already won silver at the last European Championship three years ago. Third-placed Gernot Schwab , who won his first medal at major events, completed the Austrian triple victory. For the first time since the first two European Championships in 1970 and 1971, three Austrians were on the podium in the men's singles. Two more Austrians followed in fourth and fifth place, defending champion Anton Blasbichler from Italy came in sixth.
