European Natural Track Luge Championships 1978

The 7th FIL Natural Track Luge European Championship took place from February 17-19 , 1978 in Aurach near Kitzbühel in Austria .

Date: February 18 (1st and 2nd race) and February 19, 1978 (3rd race)

The Italian Hubert Mairamhof was European champion in the men's single seater ahead of the Austrian Werner Prantl . It was their first European Championship medal for both of them. The 1975 European champion, Alfred Kogler from Austria, came third. The defending champion Erich Graber did not finish.

The Austrian Elfriede Pirkmann became European champion in the women's singles for the second time since 1973. Even at the three European championships in between, she had always achieved the medal ranks. The silver medal went to the Italian Roswitha Fischer , who won her first precious metal at European championships. The third-placed Ruth Oberhöller from Austria had also reached third place in 1971. As with the men, the defending champion - the Italian Helene Mitterstieler - also retired from the women .

The Austrians Werner Mücke and Helmut Hutter became European champions in the two-seater . The silver medal went to the Italians Hubert Mairamhof and Josef Ploner , who were third at the last European Championship. The bronze medal went to the Austrians Gebhard Oberbichler and Hubert Ausserdorfer . For them it was their only medal at major events.
