Location of the municipality of Freigericht in the Main-Kinzig district | ||
Freigericht is a rural community in the Main-Kinzig district of Hesse . It is right on the Bavarian border. The municipality of Freigericht should not be confused with the historical region of Freigericht Alzenau , to which, in addition to the Hessian municipality of Freigericht, a number of today's Bavarian municipalities or districts belonged.
geography
Geographical location
Freigericht is located near the Rhine-Main area , on the foothills of the Spessart , directly on the Hessian-Bavarian border. Over 40% of the municipal area is forested. The highest point with 371 m above sea level. NN is the Heidkopf in the Sölzert , the lowest point is 140 m above sea level. NN .
Freigericht lies between 50 ° 5 'and 50 ° 13' north latitude and 9 ° 5 'and 9 ° 13' east longitude . The community extends over an area of 33.42 km² in a side valley of the Kinzig .
geology
Geologically, Freigericht lies on the border between the Hessian Rotliegend Basin in the northwest and the Crystalline Spessart in the southeast. The tectonic fault, at which the at least 410 million year old sea floor, which was transformed into mica schist and gneiss at great depth and under high lateral pressure , was squeezed up as a low mountain range (Spessart), runs through Neuses and Horbach .
The Zechsteindolomit of Altenmittlau can be seen as a geological specialty . This is an approx. 260 million year old reef formed by various marine organisms, which could only arise in a strongly heated arm of the sea. When mining the Zechsteindolomite for the production of burnt lime and mineral road construction products, unique tabular azurite crystals were found. In the somewhat older (below) Zechstein conglomerate fossil conifers have been found.
The major part of the underground free court consists of claystones and sandstones of Rotliegend near the surface (270 million years old, easily recognizable in the Gänsewald), which are mostly covered on the slopes by loess loam (formed from ice-age rock dust approx. 12,000 years old).
At least in the northeast of Somborn and Bernbach , sands and gravel from the middle to early phase of the Ice Age (the Pleistocene from approx. 2 million to approx. 12,000 years ago) have been preserved and contain isolated vertebrate fossils. Hasselbach and Birkisbach are to be seen as the main receiving waters in Freigericht and drain the area to the northwest. Probably the Schnellmich brook flowing from the crystalline Spessart to Freigericht poured the minable gravel sand, the extraction of which created a small lake landscape hidden in the forest between Neuses and Horbach. As interesting as the geological conditions in Freigericht are, the landscape is also varied.
Various barrows were found in the southern part of the community .
On June 19, 1930, an approximately 40,000-year-old mammoth tooth was found during construction work in the Somborn district and was brought to the then district town of Gelnhausen . With the establishment of the local history museum in Freigericht, the community insisted (so far in vain) that the property be returned.

history
Surname
The four main courts of Wilmundsheim (today Alzenau ), Hörstein , Mömbris and Somborn (with a few other villages) used to share a contiguous forest area, the so-called Hohe Mark . Around 1200 the Wilmundsheimer Zenten received self-administration rights and became free, imperial courts. Hence the name Freigericht comes from . In 1500, the Electorate of Mainz and the County of Hanau-Münzenberg received the free court as an imperial fief . The district of today's municipality of Freigericht consists mainly of the part of the medieval open court, which fell to Hesse in 1740 after real division between Kurmainz and the Landgraviate of Hessen-Kassel - the latter had inherited the County of Hanau-Münzenberg in 1736.
Church building
The municipality of Freigericht was created in the course of the regional reform in Hesse on January 1, 1970 through the voluntary amalgamation of the municipalities Altenmittlau, Bernbach, Horbach, Neuses and Somborn.

Religions
Catholic Church
Since ecclesiastical jurisdiction remained with the Archbishops of Mainz at the time of the condominium between Hanau and Mainz , the Reformation - in contrast to the County of Hanau-Münzenberg - could not prevail here. In contrast to the neighboring communities, around 60% of the population here is still Roman Catholic .
For centuries there was only one parish in Somborn, to which, in addition to today's free judges, Albstadt also belonged. This place remained with Kurmainz when the free court was divided in 1740 and has belonged to Alzenau since 1972 . In the 18th century chapels were built in the individual places, from which independent parishes gradually formed.
Through the papal bull Provida solersque of August 16, 1821, the Hessian free court came to the diocese of Fulda.
In the course of the pastoral process in the diocese of Fulda (partly due to the lack of priests), the parishes of the free court agreed with the Kuratie in Hasselroth on July 2, 2006 to form a pastoral association “St. Peter and Paul ”merged.
Several parishes are looked after by a pastor, in Somborn / Hasselroth there was also a chaplain until 2017. The “moderator” (chairman) of the association is the pastor of St. Wendelin (Neuses), St. Michael (Horbach), St. Anna (Somborn) and St. Maria (Hasselroth), Christoph Rödig.
In Freigericht, which belongs to the Kinzigtal deanery , there are the following five parishes, whose parish districts are congruent with the districts:
- Parish St. Anna, Somborn - The mother parish of the Free Court (formerly St. Peter and Paul)
- Parish of St. Bartholomew, Bernbach
- Parish of St. Markus, Altenmittlau
- Curate St. Michael, Horbach
- Parish of St. Wendelin, Neuses
Protestant church
A good 17% of the free judges are Protestant . They belong to the Johannesgemeinde, which includes all districts. The community became independent in 1980, previously it was a branch of the community in Niedermittlau . The Protestant Johannesgemeinde today has around 2500 members.
The cornerstone of the Evangelical St. John's Church in the Somborn district was laid on June 16, 1963, and it was inaugurated on October 4, 1964. It has a high hipped roof and a separate bell tower. After the number of Protestants in Freigericht rose sharply in the following years, the Evangelical Church of Kurhessen-Waldeck set up its own pastorate for Freigericht in 1982. In 1985 the church council commissioned an extension with the parish hall and added it to the church. Over the next two decades, the interior of the church was redesigned. Outstanding artistic works are the colored glass windows that surround the entire interior. The decoration of the sacred space is very unusual with the relief-like wall design and the idiosyncratic wooden sculptures of the altar, ambo and baptismal font. There is also a simple wooden cross with a crown of thorns, the huge forged ceiling chandelier and the Easter candlestick. The harmonious overall impression is borne by the warm wood tones of the parquet floor and the ceiling space that opens far upwards with its colored gable window.
Jewish community
Up until the Second World War there was a small Jewish community with its own synagogue in the Somborn district . During the pogrom night on November 9, 1938, she was saved by the intervention of the Somborn mayor and survived the chaos of war. The building was later converted into a residential building.
politics
The political bodies of the Hessian community Freigericht made according Magistrate Constitution from the local council , the mayor and the parish council . The mayor sits in front of the community board. Local councils exist in the districts until the end of the municipal electoral period in 2021 . Since the local elections in 2001, it has been possible in Hesse to cumulate and variegate municipal and local council elections . H. to give a person up to three votes or to distribute votes to different parties.
To better involve children and young people in decisions that affect them, there was a child and youth parliament in the municipality of Freigericht until 2015 . In the absence of participation, it was dissolved again.
At the federal level Freigericht belonged to the Bundestag constituency of Hanau until 2009 , from 2013 to the Bundestag constituency of Main-Kinzig - Wetterau II - Schotten ; In the Hessian state parliament, the municipality is assigned to the Main-Kinzig I constituency .
Community representation
The free judges community council consists of 37 members. Since the community was founded in 1970, the CDU has been the strongest party within the local council, but it has suffered considerable losses since its absolute victory in 2001. In the 2011 local elections, a total of seven political groups were elected to the local council. After the local elections in 2016, five are still represented, as the FDP and the BfF no longer ran their own lists. For the first time since the municipal merger, the UWG is the strongest parliamentary group.
The local elections on March 6, 2016 produced the following results, compared to previous local elections:

Parish council
The municipal board is elected by the municipal council at the beginning of the legislative period and consists of the full-time mayor and ten honorary councilors. It is the administrative body of the municipality, which prepares and implements the resolutions of the municipal council.
Children's and youth parliament
A children and youth parliament was founded to involve children and young people more closely in the decisions of the community. Young people from all parts of the village were represented in this parliament, and the children's and youth parliament had 11 members. The elections took place every two years, with young people between the ages of 12 and 18 entitled to vote. In the absence of candidates, the children's and youth parliament was dissolved again in 2015.
Parties
Christian Democratic Union of Germany (CDU)
The Christian Democratic Union (CDU) Freigericht has existed since 1945, when, shortly after the end of the Second World War, the first democratic parties were allowed to organize with special permission from the Allied occupying power. At that time, the CDU was founded according to the Bamberg guidelines of today's CSU and shortly afterwards it joined the newly founded State Association of Hesse. After the regional reform, the CDU formed a community association in Freigericht and is one of the strongest member associations of the CDU Main-Kinzig. The CDU has been the strongest political force in the municipal bodies since the municipality of Freigericht was founded, until it was replaced by the UWG in 2016. The Junge Union (JU) Freigericht has existed since 1951 ; it is a political youth organization in Freigericht. In 2012 it merged with the neighboring JU from Hasselroth to form a joint local association.
Social Democratic Party of Germany (SPD)
As early as the 1950s, the first representatives of the SPD appeared on electoral lists in today's districts of Freigericht. With the amalgamation of the districts through the municipal reform, the SPD Freigericht was founded. Over the years the SPD was able to establish itself in the conservative Freigericht and is now one of the political groups in Freigericht. The Jusos Freigericht are heavily involved in the political process of the community and after the local elections in 2011 again provide 2 community representatives.
Alliance 90 / The Greens (Greens)
In Freigericht there was a local group of Bündnis 90 / Die Grünen , which first moved into the municipal council in the local elections in 1993. Until 2001, the Greens formed a coalition with the SPD and UWG in the municipal council. In the absence of members, the local association had to disband in 2005. In autumn 2010 the Greens reestablished themselves with the aim of running in the upcoming local elections.
Free Democratic Party (FDP)
Since 2006 there has been a local association of the FDP in Freigericht and Hasselroth , which was able to win a seat in the local council when it ran for the first time in the local elections in 2006, and in Somborn a seat in the local council. The Young Liberal Local Association Freigericht (short: JuLis Freigericht) has existed since January 2009 . In 2016, the FDP no longer entered the local elections as an independent party, representatives of the FDP ran on the list of free citizens.
Independent voter community (UWG)
The Independent Voting Community Freigericht (UWG) has existed in its current form since the regional reform in 1970, when the groups existing in the individual districts merged into a single community. Before the merger to form the municipality of Freigericht, the groups of voters (partly UWG, partly FWG) were driving political forces in the individual municipal councils of the five towns. With the establishment of the Freigericht community, the UWG lost this role to the CDU, but was able to regain it in the 2016 local elections. Since the local elections in 2006, the UWG has been given more weight again, and Joachim Lucas is the mayor.
Citizens for Freigericht (BfF)
In December 2010, the citizens' movement to prevent the golf course from being expanded formed the group of voters “Citizens for Freigericht”. After leaving the parliamentary groups, the BfF did not run for local elections in 2016. Representatives of the BfF joined the UWG.
The incorruptible - list of free citizens
Another electoral roll emerged from the same movement, "the incorruptible - list of free citizens". In 2016, FDP members also ran on the list of free citizens.
coat of arms
Blazon : A straight-armed black paw cross in silver, covered with a blue key and a blue sword.
Meaning : The black cross on a silver background symbolizes the old relationship between the community and the diocese of Fulda.
Key and sword are the symbols of Saints Peter and Paul, the two oldest patrons of the Somborn parish church.
In a broader sense, the sword can also be interpreted symbolically as the court sword of the free court. These historical connections were used in the design of the coat of arms for the municipality of Freigericht.
This coat of arms was awarded to the municipality of Somborn as early as 1967. The use of the coat of arms was approved for the municipality of Freigericht on October 6, 1971 by the state of Hesse.
flag
The municipality's flag is a blue banner flag with white side stripes and the municipality's coat of arms . The use of the flag was approved on June 16, 1972 by the Hessian Minister of the Interior .
Community partnerships
The municipality of Freigericht has been related to St. Quentin-Fallavier , a municipality near Lyon , since 1972 . Since 2004 we have been on friendly terms with the Italian municipality of Gallicano nel Lazio near Rome . These were consolidated in 2011 with the official twinning ceremony.
In addition, some of the local clubs are friends with other clubs in Europe.
The local Kopernikus School also maintains partnerships with over 20 partner schools worldwide.
Culture and sights
Museums
In Somborn there is a local history museum in which life in the open court in the past is shown. It is currently being expanded to include a replica of the Freigerichter Kleinbahn . Another focus of the museum is cigar production in Freigericht. Until the middle of the 20th century, cigars were manufactured in factories and at home in the community .
music
The cultural life of the community is largely looked after by the numerous associations . Five orchestras , a minstrel and fanfare group, numerous choirs and other groups give several concerts each year and are known and appreciated far beyond the borders of Freigericht. Since May 2008, the community of Freigericht is home to the music association "Viktoria" Altenmittlau 1897 e. V. under the direction of its conductor, Prof. Hans Rückert, the 1st prize winner of the German orchestral competition . There are also performances by various theater groups and other events. The free judges “Babbelowende”, evenings on which the various free judges dialects are cultivated, are also enjoying growing popularity .
Summer music days
Every year in August, the communities of Freigericht and Rodenbach organize the "Summer Music Days" at Trages farm; On several evenings, concerts with music from different styles and epochs are given, which are very popular.
Buildings
Churches
The churches and their predecessor chapels are striking buildings in the Freigerichter districts .
Hof Trages
Hof Trages, a baroque estate, developed into a meeting place and retreat for numerous personalities of German Romanticism at the beginning of the 19th century .
Distant view
At the edge of the forest, on the Rodfeld, a lookout tower was built in 2000 for the 1000th anniversary of the Neuses district . The 18.5 meter high wooden tower is accessible to the public via a metal spiral staircase. The Rodfeld Tower offers views of the Wetterau hills from its 15.2 meter high platform . The Ronneburg can also be seen from here. Furthermore, the Taunus heights rising behind the city of Frankfurt are clearly visible. There is a restaurant next to the observation tower. The place is also known in the area as "Fernblick".
Wetterau-Main-Tauber position
The Wetterau-Main-Tauber position runs along the forests near Bernbach, Horbach and Neuses, formed by natural ditches and furrows . This is a bunker construction that originated in the 1930s as a result of the Treaty of Versailles . It was supposed to delay a French attack on the militarily weakened German Reich in order to gain time for the formation of the field army, which was limited to 100,000 men. Together with the Neckar-Enz position (between Eberbach and the foothills of the Black Forest), a division of the German Empire at its narrowest point was to be counteracted. During the construction period from spring 1936 to summer 1938, a total of 308 bunker structures and 21 foundation slabs for raised stands were built. Two wet anti-tank trenches were dug in the Kinzig valley and the Kahl valley. Six anti-tank barriers through multi-row pile obstacles were created at Hain-Gründau, Meerholz, Bernbach, Horbach, Altenmittlau and Neuses. There were about 45 bunkers, three foundation plates for machine gun raised stands and four of the only six post obstacles in the free judges' area. This section of the position has the greatest density of structures in the entire position. In some places only a few meters separate the structures. The 45 bunkers are mainly machine-gun loop stands and shelters with originally planned crews of five to 21 men. Shortly after the completion of the construction work, all structures were stripped of all of their furnishings, which were required for the construction of the later western wall. After that, the buildings were empty. The position lost its importance entirely. It was not until the fall of 1944 that it was decided to use the position against the approaching Americans. However, the lack of equipment, tools and trained personnel meant that the position never became a serious obstacle. After the end of the war, almost all buildings were blown up. Meanwhile, nature is reclaiming the land.
Natural monuments
Tobogganing oak
The Rodfeldeiche (incorrectly also called "Rotfelseiche") was an approximately 400-year-old German oak and stood on the eponymous Rodfeld, a hill that was once wooded and cleared in the 20th century near the Neuses district. She is considered a free judge, especially a Neuseser landmark. The tree, weakened by a fungal attack that had persisted for years , fell victim to Hurricane Kyrill in January 2007 . A new oak tree was planted in its place and a memorial stone was erected.
Sports
In the Freigericht there are not only groups and clubs that maintain culture, but also a large number of sports clubs . Tennis , table tennis , athletics , badminton , volleyball , Asian sports , and much more is offered.
Headquartered in the district Bernbach SV 1919 Bernbach played in the Oberliga Hessen and was considered one of the best "village associations" Hessen.
An 18-hole golf course was built at the Trages farm near Somborn in the 1990s .
Water-loving free judges will get their money's worth in the "Platsch" indoor pool ; a sauna is also available there.
Regular events
In Freigericht, smaller and larger celebrations take place regularly, which are organized by the local associations.

Economy and Infrastructure
traffic
The A 66 from Frankfurt to Fulda runs north of Freigericht . In the southern area, the L3202 runs from Gelnhausen to Alzenau .
Free judge Kleinbahn
The Freigerichter Kleinbahn operated between 1904 and 1955 between the train stations Langenselbold and Gelnhausen on the Frankfurt am Main – Fulda line and opened up the districts of Freigericht and Hasselroth . It was of decisive importance for the economic life of the small towns, because the residents could now commute to the Rhine-Main area (Hanau, Offenbach am Main , Frankfurt). At the same time, establishments in the Freigericht settled in which mainly women (including home work) were active. With the increase in road traffic in the 1950s, the operation of the small train was no longer economical and was discontinued.
