Josef Benzing

Josef Benzing (born February 4, 1904 in Neuses ; † May 18, 1981 ) was a German librarian and Luther bibliographer and researcher of book printing . During the Second World War he worked in occupied Ukraine.

Life

Josef (also Joseph) Benzing's parents were the farmer Konrad Benzing and Anna Maria, née Fleckenstein. After visiting the National Gymnasium in Fulda (1919-1924), he studied one semester economy , but then moved to the Modern Languages with a focus on Romance and left the university in Frankfurt am Main in 1930 after the state examination.

He trained as a librarian at the Frankfurt City Library and in Berlin. After the specialist examination in Berlin , he was in the academic service of the Prussian State Library in Berlin from 1933 to 1945 . As an employee of the incunabula department and co-editor of the publications of the Society for Typenkunde des 15. Century (1931-1939), he acquired the basic knowledge for his scientific life's work.

From 1941 to 1943 he was the head of the library of the Academy of Sciences in Kiev for the Reich Ministry for the Occupied Eastern Territories and employee of the head of the "State Administration of Archives, Libraries and Museums" in the Reich Commissariat of Ukraine , Georg Winter . In Ukraine he coordinated the book robbery of the special libraries staff in the Einsatzstab Reichsleiter Rosenberg (ERR). In the winter of 1941–1942, Benzing “secured” the books from “abandoned” or Jewish apartments and from some Kiev cultural institutions and had them loaded into depots of the main Ukraine working group. In addition, Benzing worked until June 1942 as head of the "Central Library Special Staff" of the NSDAP High School . In the winter of 1943 Benzing delivered the last confiscated books to Ratibor and Tanzenberg Castle in front of the approaching front .

After the end of the war, the family of six found together again in Neuses. Benzing received a position at the Mainz University Library . When he retired in 1966, he was senior librarian and deputy director. The note box he left behind formed the basis for the VD 16 . He later lived in Budenheim .
