Copernicus School with a view of Freigericht-Somborn

The Kopernikusschule Freigericht ( KSF for short ), a cooperative comprehensive school , is Germany's largest general education school and is located in Freigericht in Hesse . Approx. 2500 pupils in the branches of Hauptschule , Realschule , Gymnasium and Gymnasiale Oberstufe are taught here. The school sponsor is the Main-Kinzig-Kreis , the headmaster is Ulrich Mayer.

history

The KSF emerged in 1971 from the Episcopal Progymnasium (Leonard Heid School) in Somborn. The building complex of the school was built from the spring of 1971 and continuously expanded in accordance with the steadily increasing number of students. Since 1991 it has been called the "Kopernikusschule" and since 1992 it has been one of Hesse's first European schools . In 1972, for the first time, 15 pupils took the Abitur examination at what was then the "Comprehensive School Freigericht"; now there are regularly well over 100 per year. The KSF offers all-day care and was given a new “cafeteria” in 2006 to provide the students with hot meals.

Leonard Heid School

The predecessor of the Kopernikusschule was the Episcopal Progymnasium founded on May 16, 1946 , later the Leonard-Heid-Schule. With this school, the Freigericht pupils were able to attend a higher school locally for the first time, which was previously only possible in the cathedral city of Fulda and associated with corresponding costs. In 1946, the school system was a Sexta and a Quinta with 50 students started, had to pay school fees of 20 dollars per month. The school building was a house on the Somborn sports field, which was rebuilt and expanded several times due to the steadily increasing number of pupils. Despite the Catholic sponsorship, pupils of other denominations were also allowed from the beginning to receive their own religious instruction. On April 1, 1955 , the Somborn Episcopal Progymnasium became a state-recognized private school.

In autumn 1968 the sponsorship was transferred to the district of Gelnhausen , which officially ran the school as a branch of the Grimmelshausen-Gymnasium Gelnhausen, but granted it full internal sovereignty. From the 1969/70 school year onwards, the school was expanded into a full establishment, so that it was also possible to take the Abitur examination.

European school

In addition to the usual lessons, the Copernicus School also offers other courses with a European focus, e. B. Exchanges with schools in Europe and the USA, internships abroad, bilingual lessons in German and English, history and geography in French. Since 2006 the AbiBac can be achieved at the Kopernikusschule.

principal

The first headmaster of the KSF (at that time still comprehensive school Freigericht ) was from 1971 to 1989 the last head of the Leonard-Heid-Schule, Helmut Zwergel. His successor was (until his retirement in 2001) Dr. Willi Müller, himself a former student of the Progymnasium. Until 2015, Anna-Maria Dörr, formerly the educational director, ran the Kopernikus School. Ulrich Mayer has been the headmaster at the KSF since the school year 15/16.

groups

There are five choirs in the KSF:

  • the choir class of classes G5c and R5c
  • the choir of years 5 and 6
  • the choir from years 7 to 9
  • the high school choir
  • the girls' ensemble

two wind classes:

  • the wind class of classes G5b and R5b
  • the wind class of classes G6b and R6b

There are also the following musical groups:

  • a rock band and the newly founded jazz and big band.

Observatory

The KSF has its own observatory , which is used both in science classes and for events outside the school by the “Astronomical Working Group Freigericht e. V. "is used.

School newspaper

The student magazine Teleskop gained a certain degree of awareness beyond the borders of Freigericht when it was awarded a special prize as a "hit sheet" by the news magazine Der Spiegel in 1998 .

An overview of various KSF school newspapers:
current: Der Astronaut
2000–2006: Impulse
1995–2000: Teleskop - The current youth magazine
1984–1994: Bunkerblatt
1977–1983: Schwarzwurz
At the end of the 1990s, a "school newspaper" called Sterngucker existed for a short time . which differed from the telescope both in terms of printing and content and was discontinued after a short time.

After several years there was no school newspaper, we are working on one again today. The astronaut, published by the Schülerzeitungs-AG, initially only appears online and took part in the Spiegel competition again in 2010/11 .

School medical service

For a number of years there has been a school medical service at the Kopernikus School in Freigericht. The school medical service is there to provide first aid effectively in emergencies or illnesses in the school.
