The "SPIEGEL School Newspaper Award" is looking for the best German school newspapers every year. In different categories such as The young journalists can prove themselves, for example, in magazine content, layout or report . The competition has been organized by the German news magazine DER SPIEGEL since 1996 . By 2008, around 60,000 young journalists had applied with well over 20,000 works. procedure

Currently (2015) editorial offices can apply with their school newspapers in four categories: magazine content (in order to increase equal opportunities, the jury evaluates the grammar schools separately from all other types of school in this category), cover picture, layout and online presence. Individual pupils can apply with their contributions for the school newspaper in the categories report, interview and photo.

The announcement for the competition traditionally takes place in autumn. The closing date for all entries is set for the end of March of the following year. The jury decides on the award of the prizes in May. The first place winners in each category will be invited to an award ceremony in Hamburg in June, which is embedded in a multi-day program.

Prices

Special "Energy" prize for the Financial T ('a) ime (2007)

Five editors of the school newspaper of the year fly for a week to an annually changing city and are looked after by an editor on site. In the magazine content category, first place receives 1,000 euros, second place 600 euros, third place 400 euros and places four to ten prizes in kind. In all other categories - cover picture, layout, online presence, reportage, interview and photo - first place receives 600 euros, second place 400 euros and third place 300 euros. In addition, prizes for special articles on current topics from politics and society are advertised every year.

jury

The jury is chaired by SPIEGEL editor-in-chief Georg Mascolo . His predecessor as editor-in-chief and jury chairman, Stefan Aust , initiated the competition at his own request. The jury decides in May on the award of the prizes for the current competition.

Consequences of competition

The young journalists brought together through the competition have repeatedly initiated joint projects. Two new ones were added in 2010: the Young Journalists' Club, a network for young writers, and the Tonic magazine , which is aimed at readers between 16 and 30 years of age.
