Sylvio Kroll (born April 29, 1965 in Lübben ) is a former German gymnast .

Life and sports career

Kroll was discovered early on through the promotion of youngsters in GDR sport . His sport was already set at the age of six. His first trainer at TZ Lübben from 1971 to 1974 was Guido Janz, the father of Olympic champion Karin Janz . From 1975 he attended the children's and youth sports school in Cottbus and regularly took part in children's and youth spartakiads, where he was four-time winner in 1979 in all-around, floor , horizontal bar and jump . At the junior championships in 1981 he won three titles (all-around, parallel bars and floor). In 1982 he was GDR horse jumping champion for the first time and won the bronze medal at the European Junior Championships. In 1983 he took part in a world championship for the first time, but could not yet place in the top three. Because of the boycott of the Games by the GDR and other countries, he was unable to participate in the 1984 Summer Olympics . In the "substitute games", the friendship competitions in Olomouc , Czechoslovakia , he underlined his good form with gold in the jump and silver with the team.

His most successful year was 1985 when he became European champion in horse jumping and vice European champion on parallel bars and pommel horse , won the parallel bars at the gymnastics world championships , became vice world champion on high bar and won two bronze medals - in the individual all-around and with the team. He also won the DTB-Pokal in the six-way free-style. He followed up on these achievements the following year with his third GDR championship title in horse jumping and his second on the horizontal bar. In the jump he was World Cup winner, on the horizontal bar he finished second and on the floor third. At the EM 1987 he was able to win two silver medals (jump and horizontal bar) and at the World Cup he became world champion in jumping and won bronze with the team. He also won the DTB Cup in jumping and on the pommel horse, was second in the all around and third on the horizontal bar. During the preparation for the Olympic Games in 1988 he fell ill with pulmonary edema . Nevertheless, he was able to win two silver medals in Seoul , one with the team and one in the horse jump. In the same disciplines, he won two silver medals at the World Championships in Stuttgart the following year. He also won the DTB Cup in horse jumping, was second on the horizontal bar and third on the rings . In 1991 he was able to win the bronze medal with the team at the World Championships in Indianapolis , the German championship on the pommel horse and the runner-up in jumping and all-around competitions. At the Olympic Games in 1992 he was “only” sixth in the jump and fourth with the team.

From 1986, Kroll studied at the German University for Physical Culture and Sport (DHfK). After his active career, he worked at the Cottbus Sports Office and was tournament director of the Cottbus World Cup " Tournament of Masters " from 1997 to 2007 . From 2007 to 2008 he headed the Stuttgart Olympic Training Center . Since 2009 he has been working at the Olympic Training Center in Frankfurt (Oder). He has also been commenting on international gymnastics competitions for Eurosport since 1994 and has been a member of the Executive Committee of the European Gymnastics Union (UEG) since 2003 .

He has been married since 1989 and has two children with his wife. His hobbies are contemporary literature and music.
