Tournament of Masters
The championship tournament is one of the most important international tournaments in apparatus gymnastics , which has existed since 1973. After two editions in Schwerin (1973) and Berlin (1978), the “Tournament of Masters” has been held annually in Cottbus since 1979 .
Until 1993 the competition consisted of a simple all-round competition with a gymnastics exercise on each device and the subsequent device finals. From 1994 the tournament was considered a Grand Prix event. From 2000 to 2010, and again since 2016, the championship tournament has been recognized as a World Cup tournament by the International Gymnastics Federation ( Fédération Internationale de Gymnastique , FIG). From 2011 to 2016 the event was part of the Challenge Cup series of FIG.
Event locations in Cottbus
The championship tournament took place from 1979 to 1995, 1997 to 2000 and 2002 in the Cottbus town hall. In 1996 and 2001 the tournament stopped in the Cottbus exhibition hall, but lost the flair of the “gymnastics opera” in the town hall. Gymnastics has been taking place in the Lausitz Arena Cottbus since 2003 . The arena does not offer the noble atmosphere of the Cottbus town hall, but with a similar capacity it has decisive advantages for the athletes such as the separate gymnasium. For the 2006 anniversary, the 30th championship tournament and the 850th anniversary of the city of Cottbus, the tournament returned to the town hall for the finals.
meaning
The Cottbus championship tournament is today the oldest gymnastics event of international importance. Even if the tournament was now only considered a challenge in the FIG regulations, it is extremely popular with the world's top athletes. This is mainly due to the perfect organization for the gymnasts and the family flair of the event. “Tournament of Masters” has also been patented as a trademark since 2003.
