The Cataplana is a Portuguese copper or iron pot with a tight-fitting lid and two handles.

On the Portuguese coast in particular, it was the main cookware for a long time and is still used today, especially for gently cooking / stewing fish and mussel dishes. The word cataplana is also sometimes used for a stew of clams and pork that was cooked in such a pot. Today the Cataplana is also popular with tourists as a typical Portugal souvenir .

function

Originally, the Cataplana was used either directly on an open fire or on stoves with coal or wood firing. The pot is closed with clamps. Since the bottom of the traditional Cataplana is rounded, cooking on modern electric stoves is not possible. However, there are smooth-bottomed stainless steel cataplana for all types of herds.
