Negaunee is a city in Marquette County , Michigan .
etymology
The word Negaunee comes from the Ojibwa word niganj , which means "in advance". That was probably the Ojibwa name for the word "pioneer". Because the name of the neighboring town of Ishpeming means "on the mountain", it is interpreted as meaning "heaven", while Negaunee means "hell".
history
Negaunee was founded in the early 19th century after the discovery of the Marquette Iron Range ore vein . In 1845 the first mine was opened to mine the iron. Forges were also added for further processing. In 1858 the place got a postal service, in 1865 Negaunee received the status of Town (United States) and in 1868 the first police station was opened. In 1873 Negaunee got its current status as a city. The expansion of mining activities led to the influx of many immigrants. In the early 20th century, however, the mining industry lost its importance and the population halved. The first mine in Negaunee, dating from 1845, closed in the 1940s. Thereafter, the mine and the workers' houses were converted into a museum called Old Towne . The population decreased only slightly.
