He starts in both single and double and is one of the most successful German athletes, especially in double. Together with Christian Wichan, he was the only German so far to win a World Cup race in a two-seater, finished fourth at the 2012 European Championship and fifth in the overall World Cup in the 2010/2011 season . Kierspel has been four times German champion in two-seater and once German champion in single-seater.

Career

Björn Kierspel was born in Bergisch Gladbach in North Rhine-Westphalia and moved with his family to Navis (Tyrol) at the age of five . From 1992 to 2001 he took part in sport toboggan races in Austria, and in 1999 he became Austrian junior champion in single-seater. In 2001 Kierspel switched to luge on natural track. He starts since then for SC Riessersee , was admitted to the German national squad after good performances in training in December 2001 and came from the 2001/2002 season in the World Cup are used. The best result of his first World Cup winter was a 16th place in Hüttau and he was 21st in the overall ranking .

Since the 2002/2003 season , Kierspel has not only started in the single-seater, but also forms, initially with Hansjörg Mühlbacher , the only German two-seater pair in the World Cup. Kierspel / Mühlbacher achieved three ninth and one tenth places in their first season, but were no longer able to take part in the last two World Cup races and the World Championship due to Björn Kierspel's fibula fracture . They finished tenth in the overall World Cup. In the single-seater, Kierspel reached an 18th and three 19th places until his injury, making him 21st in the overall World Cup, as in the previous year. In the 2003/2004 season , Kierspel / Mühlbacher achieved five top 10 results, with a sixth place on January 6, 2004 in Grande Prairie being their best result. They achieved eighth place in the overall World Cup. In the single-seater, Kierspel finished in the top 15 in two races and was 14th in the overall classification. At the 2004 European Championships in Hüttau , Björn Kierspel achieved 26th place in the singles and with Hansjörg Mühlbacher 14th place in the doubles. In the 2004/2005 season, Kierspel was able to place himself in the top 18 in all single-seater World Cup races, he achieved 16th place three times, making him 15th in the overall classification. This winter he started in a two-seater with Martin Nachmann . However, they only took part in the first two World Cup races, achieved a ninth and twelfth place and came 14th in the overall World Cup. At the 2005 World Championships in Latsch , Kierspel was 20th in the single-seater, but only came 13th and last with Martin Nachmann in the double-seater. The Kierspel / Nachmann duo also contested the team competition together with Michaela Maurer and Marcus Grausam , who started in the single-seater, in which the German team finished eighth among ten teams. In the 2005/2006 season Björn Kierspel only competed in the single-seater. With a total of three 13th, as well as a 14th and two 15th places, he reached 13th place in the overall World Cup and thus his best overall single-seater result for a long time. At the 2006 European Championships in Umhausen , he was 16.

Since the 2006/2007 season , Kierspel has been racing in a two-seater together with Christian Wichan . In their first winter together, they were among the top ten in four World Cup races and achieved fifth place in Umhausen as their best result. They finished ninth in the overall World Cup. In the single-seater Björn Kierspel achieved his best result in a single-seater World Cup race at the end of this season with eleventh place in the World Cup final in Moos in Passeier , but in the overall standings he fell three places to 16th place. At the 2007 World Championships in Grande Prairie , he achieved 18th place in the singles and with Wichan the seventh, but only last, place in the doubles. In the team competition, Kierspel / Wichan, together with Michaela Maurer and Marcus Grausam, finished seventh out of eight teams. In the 2007/2008 season , the Kierspel / Wichan duo narrowly missed their first podium positions in the two-seater World Cup. They reached fourth place in the first World Cup race on December 23, 2007 in Moos in Passeier and in the third World Cup race on January 20, 2008 in Umhausen - at the same time as the Russian double Jegorow / Popow . There were also sixth and two eighth places, making them sixth in the overall World Cup and thus the best result of a German two-seater pair in the overall World Cup. Kierspel / Wichan also showed a good performance at the European Championship 2008 in Olang . There they reached fifth place and thus the best result so far that a German doubles team has ever achieved at both European and World Championships. Björn Kierspel finished 18th in the singles at the European Championships, and in the World Cup he achieved 14th place overall with a total of five top 15 results.

Due to an injury to Christian Wichan, Björn Kierspel only started in the single seater in the 2008/2009 season . He was among the fastest 20 in the World Cup in four races, achieved his best result with 14th place in Unterammergau and was 16th in the overall ranking. At the 2009 World Championships in Moos in Passeier he achieved 17th place. In the 2009/2010 season he was among the fastest 20 in all six World Cup races and achieved his second-best single-seater World Cup result with twelfth place at the season finale in Garmisch-Partenkirchen. Nevertheless, he fell one place to 17th place in the overall World Cup. He started again this winter with Christian Wichan in the two-seater. The duo achieved five top 10 places and their best result came in sixth in the last race of the season, placing them seventh in the overall World Cup. At the 2010 European Championships in St. Sebastian Björn Kierspel was the best German in the single-seater for the first time in 16th place, but Kierspel / Wichan only achieved twelfth and last place in the double-seater after a fall in the first round. In the team competition they came in seventh, again with Michaela Maurer and Marcus Grausam.

In January 2011 Björn Kierspel became German champion in single-seater for the first time, after having been German champion in double-seater four times. In the 2010/2011 season he was able to place in the single-seater in five of the six races in the top 15 of the World Cup , making it 13th overall for the second time after 2005/2006. In the two-seater, Kierspel / Wichan were among the fastest seven in two races in the first half of the season; before they surprisingly celebrated their first World Cup victory on February 12, 2011 in Unterammergau . This was the first World Cup victory in the doubles and the second ever for Germany. In the overall classification, they achieved fifth place and thus the best overall result for a German doubles in the World Cup to date. At the 2011 World Cup in Umhausen, the duo achieved seventh place in the doubles and, together with Michaela and Georg Maurer, sixth place in the team competition. Björn Kierspel took 19th place in the single-seater.

In the 2011/2012 season , Kierspels best single-seater World Cup result was 13th at the final in Umhausen, while he also achieved his second podium finish in third with Christian Wichan in the double-seater at the World Cup final. In the overall double-seater World Cup, Kierspel / Wichan finished seventh. At the 2012 European Championships in Novouralsk , finishing fourth, they missed a medal in the doubles by just three hundredths of a second. In the team competition, they finished seventh with Veronika Nachmann and Marcus Grausam, while Björn Kierspel was the best German in a single-seater in 17th place.
