In the single-seater he achieved ninth place at the 2007 World Cup, while a twelfth place in the World Cup is his best result so far. In 2011, the duo Kierspel / Wichan achieved their first World Cup victory for Germany in the doubles; In addition, they achieved fourth place at the 2012 European Championships and fifth place in the 2010/2011 overall World Cup, the best results that German natural track tobogganers have achieved at these events so far. In 2008 and 2010 they became German champions. Wichan's brother Markus is also a natural track tobogganist.

Career

Christian Wichan started the World Cup for the first time on January 13, 2002 . The 21st place, which he achieved on his debut in Umhausen , remained his best result until the end of the 2001/2002 season and he was 28th in the overall World Cup. As in this winter, he only took part in three of the six World Cup races in the next two years. While in the season 2002/2003 a 24th place at the start in Völs was his best result, at the end of the 2003/2004 season he finished 19th in Aurach for the first time among the fastest 20. In the overall World Cup, however, he came in both seasons not in the top 30. At the Junior World and European Championships, in which he has participated since 2002, he achieved placements in midfield during these years, as well as at the 2003 World Championships in Železniki , his first title fight in the general class, with 25th place and the European championship 2004 in Hüttau with 32nd place. In 2003 he became German junior champion.

In the winter of 2004/2005, Wichan did not take part in any competitions. In the 2005/2006 season he was used for the first time in all six World Cup races and achieved three top 20 placements, with his best results being two 19th places in Olang and Grande Prairie . In the overall World Cup, he achieved 20th place. At the 2006 European Championships in Umhausen, he was 20th and three weeks later at the 2006 Junior World Championships in Garmisch-Partenkirchen , eleventh. Since the 2006/2007 season , Christian Wichan has not only started in a single-seater, but also in a two-seater. With Björn Kierspel , who is seven years older than him and who already had several years of World Cup experience in doubles, he is currently the only German doubles pair in the World Cup. In their first winter together, they achieved an eleventh and three tenth places as well as a fifth place in Umhausen, making them ninth in the overall World Cup. In the single seater, Christian Wichan was able to improve further this year. He came in five of six World Cup races in the top 20, four times of which he achieved a 16th place, which he was 17th in the overall World Cup and achieved his best overall result to date. At the 2007 World Championships in Grande Prairie, Christian Wichan even reached ninth place and was the best German in the single-seater, just ahead of Georg Maurer , who was tenth, 14 hundredths of a second behind Wichan. Before that, only Hans Noll was the only German who managed to achieve top 10 results at world championships in single-seater (7th place in 1990 and 10th place in 1996 ). In the two-seater, Kierspel / Wichan only crossed the finish line last in seventh place. The duo Kierspel / Wichan, together with Michaela Maurer and Marcus Grausam , who started in the single-seater, also took part in the team competition, in which the German team came in seventh out of eight teams.

At the beginning of the 2007/2008 season , Christian Wichan achieved his first top 15 single-seater result with 14th place in Moos in Passeier . He was also ranked 15th twice and 16th once. But because he did not take part in the last two World Cup races, he fell back to 21st place overall. In the doubles, the Kierspel / Wichan duo achieved fourth place in the first World Cup race in Moos in Passeier and in the third World Cup race in Umhausen - in Umhausen at the same time as the Russian double Jegorow / Popow . There were also sixth and two eighth places, making them sixth in the overall World Cup and thus the best result that a German two-seater couple had achieved in the overall World Cup. Kierspel / Wichan also showed a good performance at the European Championship 2008 in Olang. There they reached fifth place and thus the best result so far that a German doubles team has ever achieved at both European and World Championships. In addition, they became German champions in doubles in 2008. In the single-seater Christian Wichan came 19th at the EM.

In December 2008, Christian Wichan was seriously injured in doubles training, which is why he could not take part in any competitions in the 2008/2009 season. In the 2009/2010 season he achieved three 15th, as well as a 19th and a 20th place in the single-seater, making him 19th in the overall World Cup. In the doubles, Christian Wichan and Björn Kierspel came in all five World Cup races in which they took part in the top ten, their best result was a sixth place at the season finale in Garmisch-Partenkirchen and she was seventh in the overall World Cup. At the 2010 European Championships in St. Sebastian , Kierspel / Wichan only achieved twelfth and last place after a fall in the first round. The day before, they had achieved seventh place in the team competition together with Michaela Maurer and Marcus Grausam. Christian Wichan did not start in the single-seater. After the German championship was canceled in 2009, Christian Wichan and Björn Kierspel secured the German championship title for the second time in 2010.

In the second race of the 2010/2011 season , Christian Wichan achieved his best single-seater World Cup result with twelfth place in Nowouralsk ; In the overall World Cup, he finished 21st with two more top 20 placements. At the 2011 World Championships in Umhausen, he finished 24th in the single seater, together with Björn Kierspel in seventh place in the two-seater and with Kierspel and the single-seater Michaela and Georg Maurer in sixth place in the team competition. On February 12, 2011 Björn Kierspel and Christian Wichan surprisingly celebrated their first World Cup victory in the doubles in Unterammergau . They were the first German two-seater pair to win a World Cup race and, after Marcus Grausam, they achieved the second German World Cup victory in 2004 . In the overall standings they achieved fifth place and thus the best overall result of a German doubles in the World Cup to date.

In the 2011/2012 season , Wichan's best single-seater World Cup result was 16th at the finals in Umhausen, while in doubles with Björn Kierspel he also achieved his second podium finish in third at the World Cup final. In the overall double-seater World Cup, Kierspel / Wichan finished seventh. At the 2012 European Championships in Novouralsk , finishing fourth, they missed a medal in the doubles by just three hundredths of a second. In the team competition, they finished seventh with Veronika Nachmann and Marcus Grausam, while Christian Wichan took 21st place in a single-seater.
