Wilhelm Eberhard Gelberg

Wilhelm Eberhard Gelberg (born December 7, 1894 in Foerde near Grevenbrück , today part of the Olpe district ; † June 5, 1940 at the Oise Canal in France ) was a German politician of the NSDAP . In the 1930s he was mayor of the cities of Neuss , Wuppertal and Oberhausen .

Life

Gelberg was born on December 7, 1894, the son of a master plumber. At the beginning of the First World War he became a soldier in 1914 and was taken prisoner by the British in 1917. He was not released until 1919 and from then on worked as sales manager of the Luhnschen soap factory in Barmen and the soap and glycerine works Peter Cremer in Düsseldorf.

Gelberg joined the NSDAP in 1921. In 1923 he became leader of the Freicorps Wißmann and remained so until 1924. From 1931 to 1933 he was leader of the Büdericher SA, then until 1938 of the Neuss SA. From 1933 he was also police chief of Krefeld-Uerdingen until 1934. From April 1, 1934 to March 31, 1938, he was Lord Mayor of Neuss, the last months of this activity, from April 5, 1937 to January 20, 1938, also provisional of Wuppertal. From January 19, 1938 to April 13 of the same year, he was also Lord Mayor of Oberhausen.

Gelberg took part in the war as a captain and company commander since the beginning of the Second World War. During the campaign in the west he died on June 5, 1940 when crossing the Oise Canal in France.
