Hermann Wilhelm Thywissen (born April 10, 1917 in Düsseldorf ; † August 18, 2008 in Neuss ) was a German entrepreneur and politician ( CDU ).

Life

After attending the Neuss Minster School and the Quirinus Gymnasium Neuss , Thywissen studied law at the Albert Ludwig University in Freiburg , the Albertina in Königsberg and the Ludwig Maximilians University in Munich . In addition to his legal activities, he worked for the C. Thywissen oil mill, of which he became personally liable partner and managing director in 1953. He was chairman of the supervisory board of RheinLand Versicherung from 1946 to 1994 and played a major role in the reconstruction after the Second World War.

Thywissen was a co-founder of the Neuss CDU in 1945 . From 1956 he was a citizen representative in the school and culture committee and from 1961 a city councilor in the city council. He was the mayor of the city of Neuss from 1982 to 1984 , succeeding Herbert Karrenberg and, after the administrative reform, from 1984 to 1987.

On November 7, 1986, Thywissen defended his colleague and party colleague Graf von Spee in a speech in memory of the victims of the Reichspogromnacht 1938 and said that some saw with “bitterness”like an otherwise highly respected and correct man down to the family was pursued. The Jewish representatives, who believed they had to make an example here, [...] did themselves no favors ”. The " overwhelming majority of Christians " lived here , whose principles were " forgiveness, charity and mutual understanding ". In contrast, the principle of “an eye for an eye and a tooth for a tooth [...] makes it difficult to live together ”. These statements on this occasion were criticized as anti-Semitic and as relativizing or falsifying history.

He was often involved in the city of Neuss, especially after the Second World War. Thywissen was, among other things, president of the Neusser Bürger-Schützenverein (1961–1992) and the civil society of Neuss (1949–1999) for 33 years . In addition to other engagements, he was also a member of the board of trustees of the Marienberg school and, from 1982, a member of the supervisory board of the Neuss newspaper publisher. He was also an advisory board member of Commerzbank AG for North Rhine-Westphalia and a member of the board of the Federal Association of the German Food Industry.

Thywissen had been a member of the Catholic student union KDStV Staufia Bonn in the CV since 1948 .
