Hans Kremendahl (born September 17, 1948 in Wuppertal ; † February 10, 2015 there ) was a German political scientist and politician of the SPD .

Life

Kremendahl, who was born in Wuppertal-Cronenberg , passed his Abitur in 1967 in Remscheid . He then studied political science at the Otto Suhr Institute of the Free University of Berlin until 1971 . After receiving his doctorate in 1976, he became an assistant professor there and completed his habilitation in 1979. His main areas of research were pluralism theory and party democracy .

In 1981 he became a member of the SPD parliamentary group in the Berlin House of Representatives and spokesman for his parliamentary group's science policy. In 1985 he became the country manager of his party. From 1989 he was State Secretary in the Senate Administration for Science and Research and then from 1991 State Secretary for Economics and Technology. Five years later (1996) he became State Secretary for Urban Development, Environment and Technology; but in the same year he was elected Lord Mayor of Wuppertal and remained so until 2004. In the 2004 local elections he was nominated again by the SPD, but was defeated by Peter Jung ( CDU ).

Kremendahl died on the night of February 10th to 11th, 2015 after a short, serious illness in a Wuppertal hospital.

Corruption process

Kremendahl gained nationwide fame during his tenure as Lord Mayor of Wuppertal through the "Kremendahl Affair". In 1999 Kremendahl had received a donation of 500,000  German marks from the Wülfrath building contractor Uwe Clees to finance his election campaign . This donation brought him suspected of corruption , as the building contractor carried out several (sometimes controversial) large projects in Wuppertal and was planning more.

There were several court hearings to clarify whether Kremendahl was bribable as Lord Mayor. First of all, the regional court in Wuppertal acquitted him of this charge on December 18, 2002. According to the judges, it was not evident that the contractor's payment was linked to specific consideration. Kremendahl saw himself as well as the Wuppertal SPD relieved of the allegations of corruption, so that he was again put up as a candidate for mayor in the 2004 local elections, in which he was then surprisingly defeated by his CDU challenger Peter Jung. After revision of the prosecutor's office before the Federal Court the case had on 16 March 2006 to be re-negotiated, this time at the Regional Court of Dortmund . Here too, Kremendahl was acquitted. The 3rd Criminal Division of the Federal Court dismissed on 28 August 2007, the new revision of the prosecutor, following closely the applications of defense and federal prosecutors .

Further commitment

Kremendahl was the patron of the Wuppertaler Tafel and chairman of the workers' welfare organization in Wuppertal.
