Ursula Kraus (born August 2, 1930 in Neunkirchen , Saar area ; † August 2, 2021 ) was a politician for the SPD . From 1980 to 1990 she was a member of the state parliament of North Rhine-Westphalia and from 1984 to 1996 mayor of the city of Wuppertal .

Ursula Kraus was the older of the two daughters of the Bundestag member Friedrich Kraus . She spent her childhood and youth in the Wuppertal district of Wichlinghausen . In 1949 she graduated from secondary school . In 1949 she became a member of the IG Druck und Papier trade union . She completed an apprenticeship as an industrial clerk by 1951 . In 1956 she became a member of the SPD. Until 1980 she worked as head of the sales department at a printing company in Wuppertal.

Kraus was from 1980 to 1990 directly elected member of the state parliament of North Rhine-Westphalia in the constituency of Wuppertal IV. In the local elections in 1984 she was the joint top candidate of the SPD and the Greens in Wuppertal. On October 15, 1984, with all 37 votes from both parties, she was elected as the successor of Gottfried Gurland as the first female mayor of Wuppertal. On August 27, 1988 she also became chairwoman of the supervisory board of the Wuppertaler Stadtwerke . In the state elections in 1990, she decided not to be re-elected to the state parliament in order to be able to concentrate on her mayor's office. On March 22, 1990, she was first elected as deputy chairperson, and on March 25, 1992 as chairperson of the North Rhine-Westphalia City Council. On November 2, 1994, she was re-elected as Lord Mayor by the Wuppertal City Council with 37 of 67 votes, but this only remained until October 31, 1996. Her successor was Hans Kremendahl . Ursula Kraus last lived in a retirement home in Barmen . She died on her 91st birthday.

Honors

On June 4, 1993 Kraus received the Order of Merit of the State of North Rhine-Westphalia for her services to Wuppertal and her social commitment . On February 3, 1998 she was awarded the ring of honor of the city of Wuppertal and on August 28, 2000 she was made an honorary citizen of Wuppertal. On November 15, 2002 she received the Federal Cross of Merit, First Class. On August 30, 2010, she was awarded the honorary title of former mayor of the city of Wuppertal.
