The Association of Cities in North Rhine-Westphalia is a municipal state association of the Association of German Cities with its headquarters in Cologne . The association includes 40 cities in North Rhine-Westphalia , 23 independent and 17 district members, which represent a total of around nine million inhabitants of the state. The Regional Association of Rhineland , the Regional Association of Westphalia-Lippe , the Regional Association of Ruhr , the Transport Association of Rhine-Ruhr , the Rhenish Pension Funds and the Aachen city region are extraordinary members .

Director of the Association since 2016 Helmut Dedy , who in personal union also acts as chief executive of the German Association of Cities. Pit Clausen has chaired the board of the association since 2016 .

history

On December 21, 1946, the 4th meeting of a conference of mayors of Rhenish and Westphalian cities decided to form a “North Rhine-Westphalia” group within the German Association of Cities. The organization in question was initially called the “German Association of Cities, State Group North Rhine-Westphalia”, but the current name was not used until 1950. The office, which was previously located in the Lindenallee of the Cologne-Marienburg villa colony , moved to Gereonshaus in Cologne's old town in 2011 , where one of the two main offices of the German Association of Cities is also located.

The City Council of North Rhine-Westphalia advocates the principle of local self-government enshrined in the Basic Law ( Art. 28 ) and in the Constitution for the State of North Rhine-Westphalia (Art. 78) . The association represents the interests of the cities belonging to it in particular towards the state parliament of North Rhine-Westphalia and the state government of North Rhine-Westphalia . In addition, the association serves the exchange of experiences among its members.
