The Municipality and Cities Association of Rhineland-Palatinate eV (GStB) was founded as a regional association in the German Association of Cities and Municipalities immediately after the formation of the State of Rhineland-Palatinate on October 4, 1947 and represents the interests of the municipalities and cities in Rhineland-Palatinate towards politics , Media and society. The seat of the GStB is in Mainz in the Freiherr-vom-Stein -Haus on Deutschhausplatz .

The association accompanies legislative and ordinance procedures in Rhineland-Palatinate for its members. The GStB plays an active role in shaping political will through statements in the preparation of laws and ordinances, regular discussions with members of the state government, the parliamentary groups in the state parliament, with the parties and members of the Bundestag as well as explanations of the positions towards politics and the public. In addition, the GStB develops important practical recommendations for its members, for example model statutes, argumentation aids and handouts, and advises them on technical and legal issues. Via specialist information, its news service and a nationwide network, the GStB offers its cities and municipalities organized in it up-to-date knowledge and enables the exchange of experiences.

The GStB is organized under private law as a registered association and is independent of state supervision and influences and does not receive any state or federal subsidies. The association is a member of the German Association of Towns and Municipalities (DStGB).

Aloysius Söhngen (Mayor of the Association of Prüm ) is chairman of the Rhineland-Palatinate Association of Municipalities and Cities. His deputies are Ralph Spiegler (mayor of the Nieder-Olm community ) and Axel Haas (mayor of the Kirchheimbolanden community ). The managing board member is Karl-Heinz Frieden and his deputy is Stefan Meiborg. Heijo Höfer is the European Commissioner for the Rhineland-Palatinate Association of Municipalities and Cities . Association body

The "Gemeinde und Stadt" is the magazine of the municipality and city federation of Rhineland-Palatinate and thus the official organ of the association. In each issue, the association provides information on current local political issues. The association magazine appears monthly, usually on a current focus topic, with a circulation of 5500 copies. It contains articles and comments from the association of municipalities and cities, but also from external experts from business, politics and science, as well as reports from municipal practice.
