Heinz Frowein

Hans Heinz Jasper Frowein (born May 12, 1905 in Elberfeld , † May 2, 1994 in Wuppertal ) was a German politician ( CDU ). From 1961 to 1964 he was Lord Mayor of Wuppertal.

Life

Heinz Frowein, born on May 12, 1905 as the son of a lawyer in Elberfeld, followed suit with his father and began to study law. He attended the universities in Munich, then in Berlin and Bonn. In 1928 he received his doctorate as Dr. jur. and went back to Wuppertal, where he began to work as a lawyer.

politics

Frowein became a member of the CDU in 1945 and a city councilor in Wuppertal in 1961. On March 29, 1961, he became Lord Mayor of Wuppertal, which he remained until October 5, 1964. Then he was until June 3, 1973 under the mayor Hermann Herberts and Johannes Rau mayor of Wuppertal. During this time he always campaigned for the establishment of a Wuppertal University , which was actually founded in 1970 under Rau. In 1968 he initiated the “Aktion Museumspfennig”, which was supposed to bring donations for a new building for the Von der Heydt Museum . This collection was the start of a discussion about the new building, and a year later an international architects' competition was launched.

After 1973 he withdrew from politics and finally died on May 2, 1994 in Wuppertal.

Honors

In 1970 Heinz Frowein was awarded the Ring of Honor of the City of Wuppertal , in 1970 the Great Cross of Merit and in 1983 the Great Cross of Merit with Star of the Federal Republic of Germany.
