Paul Hartmann (politician)

Paul Hartmann (born June 30, 1869 in Hückeswagen , † November 18, 1942 in Cologne ) was a German politician of the DDP . From 1929 to 1930 he was the first Lord Mayor of the newly founded city of Wuppertal .

Life

Paul Hartmann was born on June 30, 1869 as the son of an authorized signatory in Hückeswagen. After studying law at the universities of Bonn and Berlin , he worked as a court trainee from 1892 and as a court assessor in Lennep from 1896 . During his studies he became a member of the Association of German Students in Bonn . In 1899 he became an assistant judge in Elberfeld and on July 17, 1900, an associate judge in the neighboring town of Barmen . He received his doctorate in 1905. jur. and on May 1, 1907 became the first associate judge in Barmen, which he remained until November 14, 1912.

On September 20, 1912, Hartmann was elected Lord Mayor of Barmen. Although he did not officially take up this office until November 14th, he was in charge of all business from October 1st. Until 1918 Hartmann represented his city in the Prussian manor house . From 1913 to 1929 he was a member of the provincial parliament of the Prussian Rhine Province for Barmen. On March 4, 1924, he was re-elected as Lord Mayor and remained so until July 31, 1929. After the merger of the towns of Elberfeld and Barmen, he became provisional Lord Mayor of Barmen-Elberfeld on August 1, 1929. After the name was changed to Wuppertal in the course of the year, he was officially elected as the first Lord Mayor of Wuppertal on December 20, 1929, and took up this office on January 25, 1930. He remained Lord Mayor of Wuppertal until January 15, 1931, after which he resigned. He moved to Bad Godesberg in 1931 .
