Heinrich Schmeißing

Heinrich Schmeissing (* 19th August 1905 in Schwelm ; † 15. November 1979 in Wuppertal - Barmen ) was a German politician of the CDU . Among other things, he was Lord Mayor of Wuppertal from 1951 to 1956 .

Life

Heinrich Schmeißing was born on August 19, 1905 as the son of a master roofer in the town of Schwelm, where he grew up. In the 1920s he began to study economics , which he completed in 1928 with a degree in economics. After the Second World War, he joined the CDU in 1945 and one year later became city councilor of Wuppertal, a post he held until 1958.

Schmeißing was appointed Lord Mayor of the city of Wuppertal on November 7, 1951. During this time he was involved in various topics. He campaigned, along with many other things, for the merger of the two largest football clubs in Wuppertal at the time, SSV 04 Wuppertal and TSG Vohwinkel 80 . At first it looked as if the two rival clubs would not come to a common denominator, but it was thanks to Schmeißing's negotiating skills that the Wuppertaler SV could emerge through the merger . Schmeißing also promoted the idea of ​​a support association for the Wuppertal Zoo , which was founded in 1955 and still exists today under the name of the Wuppertal Zoo Association . Schmeißing's term of office as mayor ended on November 9, 1956. Two years later, on July 1, 1958, he became city ​​treasurer and on March 1, 1967 also city ​​director of Wuppertal. He resigned from both offices on August 31, 1970.

He died on November 15, 1979 in Wuppertal-Barmen.
