Žiga Pagon (born November 14, 1986 ) is a Slovenian natural toboggan runner . He mainly starts in a single-seater and is one of the most internationally successful natural track tobogganers in his country. In World Cup races he has been among the top ten five times, four of them in a single and one in a doubles. At world and European championships his best result is eighth place in Latsch 2005 .
Career
Žiga Pagon lives in Tržič and belongs to the SAK Podljubelj toboggan club. From 2002 to 2006 he started at international junior championships, where he mostly achieved placements in the top 20 and achieved his best result with sixth place at the 2005 junior world championships in Kandalakscha . At the beginning of the 2002/2003 season he contested his first two World Cup races , in which a 20th place in the opening race in Völs was his best result. In the next winter it was also used in two World Cup races and by the end of the season in Aurach already achieved twelfth place. After he was registered for the 2003 World Championships in Železniki but did not start, he made his debut in international championships in the general class at the 2004 European Championships in Hüttau and finished 23rd.
Over the next three years, Pagon regularly took part in World Cup races and always achieved the best overall result of the up to seven Slovenes who competed in the World Cup during these years. In the 2004/2005 season he placed between twelfth and 15th place in all six World Cup races, making it twelfth in the overall World Cup. He also reached second place at the Intercontinental Cup in Železniki and also achieved second place in Jesenice the next winter . He achieved his first top 10 result in the World Cup on January 15, 2006 with eighth place in Kindberg , with which he achieved eleventh place in the 2005/2006 season and thus his best result so far in the overall World Cup. He also achieved a top 10 result, ninth place on February 9, 2007 in Moos in Passeier , in the 2006/2007 season ; in the overall World Cup he was 13. This winter Žiga Pagon took part together with the six years older Borut Kralj in World Cup races in the doubles, but achieved no top placements. The best result was a ninth place at the start of the season in Latsch, in the overall World Cup they were twelfth. Borut Kralj then ended his career and Žiga Pagon has been back in single-seater since then.
In the international championships, Žiga Pagon celebrated his greatest success so far in winter 2004/2005 when he reached eighth place at the 2005 World Championships in Latsch and was only the second Slovenian or Yugoslav natural track tobogganer after Borut Kralj's sixth place in 2003 who finished in the top ten at world championships. He was unable to repeat this result for the time being, because both at the 2007 World Championships in Grande Prairie and at the 2006 European Championships in Umhausen and 2008 in Olang he finished 21st - but was always the best Slovenian. At the 2007 World Championships, Žiga Pagon and Borut Kralj also competed in the doubles, but were disqualified, like three other couples, because the rails on their toboggan were too warm. The duo Kralj / Pagon also started in the team competition, but only came in eighth and last place together with Nina Bučinel and Miha Meglič .
In the 2007/2008 and 2008/2009 seasons , Pagon only took part in three or two World Cup races, which is why he fell far behind in the overall standings. His best World Cup result in these years was a twelfth place on January 18, 2009 in Umhausen. In the Intercontinental Cup he won a race in Jesenice on January 26, 2009, and came second there the next winter. At the 2009 World Championships in Moos in Passeier , he achieved 16th place. In winter 2009/2010 , Pagon took part in five of the six World Cup races again and achieved his best ever World Cup result on December 17, 2009 with seventh place in the opening race in Nowouralsk . In the overall World Cup he achieved 13th place and was again - for the fourth time - the best Slovene. In the title fights, Žiga Pagon was also the best in his country for the sixth time in a row, finishing 13th at the 2010 European Championship in St. Sebastian .
At the 2011 World Championships in Umhausen , Žiga Pagon, again as the best Slovene, took 18th place in the single-seater. In the 2010/2011 season, he only took part in the last race in Olang in the World Cup, which he finished in eighth place. In the 2011/2012 season he only started in one World Cup race: In Železniki he finished eleventh.
