Kiril Lazarov ( Macedonian Кирил Лазаров ; born May 10, 1980 in Titov Veles , SFR Yugoslavia ) is a Macedonian handball player .
Lazarov, who plays for the French club HBC Nantes and plays for the Macedonian men's national handball team (shirt number 7), is mostly used as a right backcourt player. His younger brother Filip also plays handball in the national team.
Career
Kiril Lazarov started playing handball at RK Ovče Pole in his hometown in 1991. He was quickly noticed and in 1994 moved to RK Borec Veles, the city's largest club. At the age of 15 he made his debut in the European Cup against Dinamo Bucharest. At the age of 16 he went to the first division club RK Pelister Bitola . Here he was in 1998, 1999 and 2000 Macedonian champion and cup winner; so that he came into the sights of the great Badel Zagreb from Croatia, who signed him in 2000 and with whom he became Croatian champion and cup winner in 2001 and 2002. In 2002 he went to the Hungarian top club Fotex Veszprém . With the men from Lake Balaton , he won the championships in 2003, 2004, 2005 and 2006 as well as the national cups in 2003, 2004, 2005 and 2007 and became a crowd favorite.
He became internationally known in the 2005/06 season when he was top scorer of the EHF Champions League with 85 goals ; a year earlier he had already scored 76 goals. In the summer of 2006 rumors circulated that he would switch to the SC Magdeburg Gladiators in the German handball Bundesliga or to FC Barcelona in the Spanish league ASOBAL ; Lazarov initially stayed with Veszprém. In 2007 he decided to join his former club, which is now called RK Croatia Osiguranje Zagreb . Lazarov Zagreb turned his back on the 2010/11 season and moved to BM Ciudad Real in Spain . Due to the license transfer from BM Ciudad Real to Atlético Madrid, he has played for Madrid since 2011. On June 7, 2013, FC Barcelona announced the commitment of Lazarov for the next two years. With Barcelona he won the Spanish championship, the Supercopa Asobal , the Copa ASOBAL , the Copa del Rey de Balonmano and the Super Globe in 2013/14 . In the 2014/15, 2015/16 and 2016/17 seasons he won both the championship and the Copa del Rey as well as the EHF Champions League in 2014/15. He has been under contract with the French first division club HBC Nantes since summer 2017 .
In the 2007/08 season he and Icelander Ólafur Stefánsson won the top scorer's crown in the EHF Champions League for the second time with 96 meetings, even though he played four fewer games than the Icelander. The Macedonian scored 92 goals at the 2009 World Cup in Croatia. He is currently the player who has scored the most goals in a World Cup tournament. Yoon Kyung-shin from South Korea previously held this record with 86 goals, set at the 1995 World Cup in Iceland.
At the 2012 European Championship in Serbia, where his team finished 5th, he scored 61 goals. That makes him the player who scores the most goals in a European Championship. Kiril Lazarov is the first player to manage to hold the record with the most goals in both European and World Cups.
Kiril Lazarov has played 221 international matches for the Macedonian national team so far .
