Career

The 1.90 m tall and 84 kg heavy goalkeeper began playing handball in his hometown at Amibal Toledo. In 2007 he moved to the youth department of FC Barcelona . With this club he also made his debut in the ASOBAL league and in the European Cup. With Barcelona he won the championship, the King's Cup and the League Cup as well as the EHF Champions League 2010/11 .

For the 2011/12 season he was loaned to BM Granollers for two years . He then signed a three-year contract with the French club Fenix ​​Toulouse Handball . For the 2014/15 season he returned to Barcelona as a replacement for Arpad Sterbik .

Pérez de Vargas made his debut for the Spanish national team in 2008, shortly after he was voted best goalkeeper at the European Under-18 Championship. For the European Championship 2012 he was in the extended squad behind Arpad Sterbik , José Javier Hombrados and José Manuel Sierra . After Hombrados ended his career and Sterbik was injured, he played his first major tournament at the 2014 European Championships , where he won the bronze medal. In 2018 he became European champion with the Spanish team . In the last main round game he injured himself and was replaced by Arpad Šterbik . Two years later he successfully defended the European title and was also elected to the All-Star team.
