Uwe Gensheimer (born October 26, 1986 in Mannheim - Neckarau ) is a German handball player .

Career

In the club

Uwe Gensheimer began playing handball in his youth at TV 1892 Friedrichsfeld. In 2003, the 1.88-meter-tall left winger moved to the Bundesliga club SG Kronau / Östringen, the later Rhein-Neckar Löwen . With the SG, he was relegated to the 2nd handball league in 2004 , but was immediately promoted again the following season. At the HBL All-Star Game 2006 he was honored as Rookie of the Year .

In 2006 , 2007 and 2010 he reached the final of the DHB Cup with the lions , which were lost to HSV Hamburg and THW Kiel respectively. 2011, 2012, 2013 and 2014 Gensheimer was by the readers of Handball week for handball player of the year selected, and also was in 2012 scorer in the Handball Bundesliga . He played with the Rhein-Neckar Löwen in the EHF Cup , in the European Cup Winners' Cup and in the EHF Champions League , where he was the top scorer in the 2010/11 season . His greatest success so far is winning the German Championship in 2016 with the Rhein-Neckar Löwen, after only two goals were missing to win the title in 2013/14 and only two points in 2014/15 . Internationally, he won his first title in 2013 with the EHF European Cup . His contract with the Lions expired in summer 2016, after which he said goodbye to the French first division club Paris Saint-Germain with the first German championship in the club's history .

In his first season in France he was able to win the French championship, in the second even the double of championship and cup. In the Champions League they surprisingly lost the final against Vardar Skopje 23:24 in 2016/17 . In the 2017/18 Champions League season , the semi-finals were over after a loss to HBC Nantes . However, you could win the game for third place against the final opponent from the previous year Vardar Skopje. In both years he was the best scorer in the Champions League at the end of the season. On January 30, 2019, his return to the Rhein-Neckar Löwen was confirmed at a press conference , Gensheimer signed a contract from summer 2019 to 2022.

On September 12, 2019, he scored his 2000th goal in the handball Bundesliga in the game against HBW Balingen-Weilstetten . He is 10th on the league's all-time top scorer list.

In the national team

Gensheimer was the top scorer in the 2004 European Youth Championship. In 2006, he won the European Championship with the German national junior team and was elected to the tournament's All-Star team. In 2007 he was named vice world champion at the Junior World Championships in Ohrid ( Macedonia ) and voted most valuable player ( MVP ).

On November 25, 2005 Uwe Gensheimer completed his first appearance in the German senior national team in Lemgo against Slovenia . He has now played 184 international matches for Germany and scored 907 goals. With Germany he took part in the European Championships in 2010 and 2012 as well as in the World Cup in 2011 , the World Cup in 2015 , the World Cup in 2017 and the World Cup in 2019 . In 2014 Gensheimer became captain of the national team. He missed the 2016 European Championship , where Germany won the title, due to an injury. He won the bronze medal at the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro . For this he was honored with the silver bay leaf on November 1st, 2016 . For the European Championship 2018 he was appointed to the 20-man squad by national coach Christian Prokop , who did the preparation. On January 7th, he was appointed to the final 16-man squad and thus took part in the EM 2018. In December 2018, Gensheimer was appointed to the final squad for the 2019 World Cup , which was held in Germany and Denmark . Captain Gensheimer, like the whole German team, played a strong tournament and was only stopped in the semifinals against Norway . They also lost the game for third place in the final seconds with 25:26 against France . Nevertheless, the tournament was a great success, especially compared to the previous one, and Gensheimer ended up fourth on the scorers list.
