Television broadcast
At the beginning of 2014, the TV rights for the men's world championships in 2015 and 2017 in France and the women's world championships in 2015 and 2017 were sold to the Qatari subsidiary of Al Jazeera beIN Sports for a record sum of around 80 million euros . As before the 2015 World Cup , beIN Sports insisted on satellite encryption of the broadcast in order to protect the exclusive rights of other broadcasters. Therefore, ARD and ZDF were again out of the question for the broadcast. The pay TV broadcaster Sky, which had broadcast the last World Cup from France, was unable to acquire the rights this time, and neither was the DAZN streaming service .
On January 5, 2017, it was announced that Deutsche Kreditbank (DKB) had secured the exclusive rights to broadcast live on the Internet to more than 50 games, including those of the German national team. The games were shown on the bank's website and YouTube channel. A day later, the IHF announced that the DKB had acquired the rights for the DHB games. The remaining games could also be received via live stream via the DKB, but with the original English commentary.
On January 11, 2017, the opening game between France and Brazil was broadcast with German commentator, Uwe Semrau. The games with German participation as well as the two semi-finals and the final were also shown with German commentary by Markus Götz and Uwe Semrau. The livestream of the first German game was interrupted for more than 15 minutes in the first half. According to the DKB, the rights exploiter beIN Sports was responsible for this. The same happened in the semi-finals between Croatia and Norway 3 minutes before the end of the game.
During the entire tournament, the live stream generated over 6 million views. During the round of 16 between Germany and Qatar, the mark of one million simultaneous access was exceeded. With the broadcast of the Handball World Cup 2017 via live stream, the DKB won the German Prize for Online Communication 2017 in the “Disruptive Campaign” category.
