beIN Sports is a sports channel that was originally founded as Al Jazeera Sport in November 2003 . Today the station has 19 HD channels and is part of the beIN Media Group, which is based in Doha .
history
On June 18, 2014, the French pay-TV company Canal + sued the broadcaster beIN Sports, accusing the broadcaster of unfair competition . The lawsuit was dismissed. In 2015 the Turkish pay-TV provider Digiturk was taken over by beIN Sports. Since the summer of 2016, BeIN Sports has been paying 748.5 million euros per season for the broadcasting rights of the French Ligue 1, which it shares with Canal +.
BeIN Sports argued with ARD about broadcasting the handball world championships in 2015 and 2017 . BeIN Sports owns the worldwide broadcasting rights for the handball world championships 2015 in Qatar and 2017 in France as well as the women's world championships in 2015 and 2017 . ARD sports coordinator Axel Balkausky said in an interview with editorial network Germany that BeIN Sports insists on not granting the rights to channels that can be received unencrypted via satellite. Since this is the case with the broadcasters of the ARD, the broadcaster is not allowed to transmit the event.
