The German master crew also started at the European championships in 1959 and won the silver medal behind the boat from Switzerland.

Also in 1960 the Düsseldorf boats trained by Theo Cohnen were competitors of the racing community from Kiel and Ratzeburg. So the Düsseldorf eight with Klaus Wegner , Jürgen Litz , Manfred Uellner, Gerd Cintl , Horst Effertz , Claus Heß , Klaus Riekemann , Günter Schroers and helmsman Michael Obst was runner-up behind the Germany eight from Ratzeburg and Kiel, who also did that in the same year Olympic final won. The Dusseldorf four without a helmsman with Hess, Wegner, Uellner and Schroers took third place in the championships and could not qualify for the all-German team at the Olympic Games. Schroers drove to Rome as a substitute for the foursome. There, Just Jahn dropped out in the double scull as a partner of the Wormser Heinz Becher . Schroers and Becher finished fifth in the Olympic prelim and were eliminated third in their reunion.

At the German Championships in 1961, Klaus Wegner, Manfred Uellner, Klaus Riekemann and Günter Schroers won in a four-man without a helmsman. At the European Championships , this boat won the bronze medal behind the teams from Italy and from the USSR. In 1964 Schroers and Effertz won the German championship title in the four without a helmsman together with Manfred Misselhorn and Albrecht Müller . At the European Championships in 1964 , this crew won ahead of the Danes and the Italians. The German foursome was also the favorite for the Olympic regatta in Tokyo . There the Danes won, the German crew reached the finals, but couldn't cope with the wind conditions and took sixth place.
