Horst Effertz (born August 4, 1938 in Düsseldorf ) is a former German rower . He became Olympic champion in Rome in 1960 .

Effertz started for the Germania Düsseldorf rowing club in 1904 . In 1958, together with Gerd Cintl, he became German champion in two-man without helmsman and in twos with helmsman, with Michael Obst in the boat as helmsman . At the European Championships in 1958, Cintl and Effertz won silver in a pair without.

In 1959, Cintl and Effertz switched to the four-wheeler with a helmsman. The Germania Düsseldorf boat with the line-up of Klaus Wegner , Gerd Cintl, Horst Effertz, Claus Heß with helmsman Michael Obst won both the German Championship and the European Championship.

The boat was modified for the 1960 Olympic Games on Lake Albano . In the line-up of Gerd Cintl, Horst Effertz, Klaus Riekemann , Jürgen Litz and Michael Obst, the boat won both the pre-run and the intermediate run with the fastest time. In the final, the boat was able to assert itself against the French boat.

In 1964 Effertz was German champion in the four-man without a helmsman. The boat in the line-up of Günter Schroers , Horst Effertz, Albrecht Müller and Manfred Misselhorn also won the European Championships in Amsterdam after the Danish crew had reached the final sprint. The Germania Düsseldorf boat was the favorite for the 1964 Olympic Games in Tokyo, but the Danish boat won there. The German four couldn't cope with the wind and ended up only sixth. Effertz ended his rowing career after the Olympic Games.

Effertz was awarded the silver bay leaf on August 23, 1959 and October 8, 1960 .
