Peter Neusel

Peter Neusel (born November 19, 1941 in Berlin ) is a former German rower . In 1964 he became Olympic champion in a four-man with helmsman .

The rower from the Berlin Rowing Club began his career in the eighth . In 1961 he won the German championships in this boat class and took second place at the European rowing championships. In 1962 he switched to the four-wheeler with a helmsman. The four-man from Berlin RC, trained by Walter Volle and made up of Bernd-Jürgen Marschner , Peter Neusel, Bernhard Britting , Manfred Ross and helmsman Jürgen Oelke , won the German championship title straight away. At the first rowing world championships held on the Rotsee near Lucerne , this four-man won ahead of the boats from France and the Soviet Union.

In 1963 the boat was reassigned, Egbert Hirschfelder and Joachim Werner moved on for Marschner and Ross . This boat also won the German Championships straight away and won the European Championships in Copenhagen ahead of the boats from Czechoslovakia and the Soviet Union. In 1964 Neusel, Britting, Werner, Hirschfelder and Oelke won the championship again. At the European Championships in Amsterdam, however, they were defeated by the newly assembled Russian boat, the Berlin four received silver ahead of the Italian boat. At the Olympic Games in Tokyo in 1964, Germany, Italy and the Soviet Union won the three preliminary runs. On the final day, October 15th, the conditions were a bit difficult due to strong winds. The Soviet European championship boat had its problems with the conditions and took fifth place, while the Berlin boat won the gold medal ahead of the Italians.

Peter Neusel was the son of the professional boxer Walter Neusel . He died on October 3, 1964, when Peter Neusel was already acclimatizing in Japan. After consulting his mother, Peter Neusel did not travel to the funeral, but competed at the Olympic Games. Peter Neusel then took over his father's pub in Charlottenburg's Suarezstraße while he was studying business administration.
