Romano Sgheiz

Romano Sgheiz (born June 28, 1937 in Colico ) is a former Italian rower who reached the finals four times in four Olympics and won two medals.

Romano Sgheiz was employed by Moto Guzzi in Mandello del Lario ; so he was able to do the sport of rowing in the in-house sports club of Moto Guzzi .

A boat from this sports club was able to qualify for the European Rowing Championships in Bled in 1956 ; Franco Trincavelli , Angelo Vanzin , Romano Sgheiz, Alberto Winkler and helmsman Ivo Stefanoni took third place in the four with helmsman behind the boats from Finland and the Soviet Union.

At the Olympic Games in Melbourne in 1956, the five Italians won the final three seconds ahead of the Swedes and the Finnish European champions; the boat from the Soviet Union had already been eliminated in the semifinals.

In 1957, the entire foursome switched to eighth and won the European Championships in Duisburg. Sgheiz, Winkler and Stefanoni helped defend the title in Poznań in 1958. In 1959, the Italian eighth finished fourth at the European Championships. For the 1960 Olympic Games , Sgheiz moved back to the four-man team, who took third place behind the boats from Germany and France in the line-up of Sgheiz, Franco Trincavelli, Fulvio Balatti , Giovanni Zucchi and Ivo Stefanoni.

In 1961 Sgheiz won his third European title with eighth in Prague. At the European Championships in Copenhagen in 1963, together with Zucchi, Balatti and his brother Luciano Sgheiz, he won silver in a four-man without a helmsman . In this line-up, the four rowers finished fifth at the 1964 Olympic Games after winning bronze at the European Championships. Then Romano Sgheiz retired, but returned to the four-man team for the 1968 Olympic Games . In the Olympic final, the Italians finished fourth, half a second behind the third-placed Swiss.
