geography

The community has 10,231 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2019) on 41.77 km² and is located at the foot of the Grigna massif. This includes the fractions Olcio , Maggiana , Mandello a lago , Tonzanico , Molina , Mulini , Motteno , Cologna , Luzzeno , Moregallo , Rongio , Gorlo , Somana and Sonvico . Neighboring municipalities are Abbadia Lariana , Ballabio , Esino Lario , Lecco , Lierna , Oliveto Lario , Pasturo , Valbrona (CO) and Valmadrera .

climate

Thanks to the location of the place, Mandello del Lario has a very special climate. The summer heat is cooled by three air currents. They are called Breva, Tivello and Montivo and come from the north, south and the eastern Grigna massif.

history

The small town was founded by the Romans and was the seat of government of the Lombards. In 603 it became the property of Count Angera. During the period of French domination, the place became an independent county. Although the city is now an active industrial and handicraft center, it has retained its historical character.

economy

Mandello del Lario is the headquarters of Moto Guzzi , which has been part of the Piaggio Group since 2004 . This group has so far absorbed the annual losses incurred by Moto Guzzi. The wind tunnel built on the factory site in 1950 can still be viewed.
