history

Old postcard with a central place

In Roman times there was a Roman fortress on the hill where the main church stands today. On the slope above the village are the remains of a fortified tower from the 12th century.

"Hanno belli monti, belli piani, bone fonti, et altre assai particolarità, con sì vago territorio, di sì aeroso sito et ritrovandosi so alto sopra quei monti, copioso de tutto quello fa bisogno al vivere humano."

- Paride Cattaneo della Torre , Cronaca dei Torriani e Descritione della Valsassina , 1571

"They have beautiful mountains, beautiful areas, good water sources and many other special features, with a vague area, in an airy place, so high up in these mountains, rich in everything that is needed for human life."

- Paride Cattaneo della Torre: Chronicle of the Torriani and description of Valsassina , 1571

For a long time only two mule tracks - now restored hiking trails - connected the village with the outside world: the older led from Esino Superiore to Perledo , a younger one was built in the first half of the 19th century and connected Esino Inferiore on the southern side of the Esino valley with Varenna at the Lakeshore. Small chapels along the paths mark the municipal boundaries. The current road was laid out between 1915 and 1925.

Esino Lario was created in 1927 from the merger of the districts Esino Superiore and Esino Inferiore .
Lario is a locally used term for Lake Como.

The village has two historical centers in Esino Superiore and Esino Inferiore , both of which also have a church. In the steep, narrow and winding streets there are numerous wells that were built towards the end of the 18th century to bring water into the village.

The parish church of San Vittore is located on a hilltop , expanded in the 19th century and redesigned in the baroque style. The baptistery  dates from the 16th century. A Way of the Cross  leads past the Chapel of San Nicolao from the village to the church.

At the beginning of the 20th century and in the interwar period, numerous villas were built around the historic town centers . The builders were wealthy private individuals who established luxury tourism in Esino Lario. The numerous buildings are mostly architecturally richly decorated. The Villa Clotilde now houses a cultural center, parts of the Pietro Penza museum and archive, and the tourist information office, while the new building of the Grigna Museum was opened in the villa park in 2016 .

The twelfth Wikimania took place in Esino Lario from June 23 to 26, 2016 . For the first time, the Wikipedians have gathered far away from big cities, which is why the motto of the event was Wikimania Goes Outdoors . There were more conference attendees than residents in the village during the event. A large part of the Esinesi were involved in the organization of Wikimania as volunteers or renters of accommodation. 1,200 people from 70 countries took part in Wikimania 2016 and 168 helpers were on duty.

In preparation for the conference, the location had received, among other things, a fiber optic Internet connection and a public WiFi network had been set up in several locations . The road was renewed with the support of more than € 500,000 from the regional and provincial governments. The cinema, which had been empty for many years, was converted into a multifunctional hall.
