Airuno is a municipality in the province of Lecco in the Lombardy region .

geography

The municipality includes the fraction Aizurro . The neighboring municipalities are Brivio , Colle Brianza , Olgiate Molgora , Olginate and Valgreghentino .

history

The presence of a settlement in Roman times is confirmed by the discovery of a funerary stele with Latin inscriptions from the late Roman period, which came to light during excavations in what is now Via Postale Vecchia. From Airuno the Roman road passed Via Spluga , which connected Milan with Lindau and led over the Splügen Pass .

Airuno is first mentioned in 960 AD in the will of a Lombard nobleman named Alcherio, who lived in the fortress of Airuno: this was a watchtower at the time of the Romans, which was transformed into a fortified castle by the Lombards.
