history
The name Merate appears for the first time in a document from 926 AD, although the settlement may have already existed in Roman times. In Roman times, the area was crossed by the Via Spluga, a Roman road that connected Milan with the Splügen Pass . In a diploma from Emperor Frederick I (HRR) issued in Roncaglia in 1158 , the Monastery of San Dionigi in Milan was confirmed as the owner of the Castle of Merate and ordered that all men of the center of Brianza should be loyal to the abbot and his successors swear and no longer make the decision to choose their own representatives without the permission of the Abbot of San Dionigi.
For centuries, Merate was part of the parish of Brivio , but over time, from the 16th century, it became more important than the common main parish and it took its place during the early 19th century. During the fighting between the Torriani (della Torre) and the Visconti for supremacy in Milan, Merate (especially the castle) suffered considerable damage. It recovered around the 17th century when, after being decimated by the plague , it became one of the richest parishes in the area after Lecco.
