Colico is a municipality on Lake Como in the province of Lecco in Lombardy , Italy, and is 76 km north of Milan on the northeastern shore of Lake Como . The Adda , the largest tributary, flows into the lake here.

With an area of ​​35.3 km² and a population of 7960 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2019) Colico is the most important city in the north of Lake Como. and includes the fractions Colico Piano (main town), Curcio , Laghetto , Olgiasca , Piona , Villatico , Posallo , Fontanedo , Palerma , Borgonuovo , La Cà , Fumiarga , Corte and San Rocco .

history

The Fuentes Fortress after its completion

In 1603/1604 the Fuentes fortress was built in Colico . Colico came under Austrian rule in 1735. During the time of the Lombard-Venetian Empire (1815–1866), the major roads connecting Milan-Lecco-Colico, the Adda and Mera valleys and roads over the Alpine passes to Central Europe were laid out. In 1861 Colico became part of the new Kingdom of Italy with Lombardy .

  • Colico is on the Milan - Lecco - Tirano railway , which is connected to the Bernina Railway . There is also a train connection to Chiavenna .
  • In Colico, two major motorways meet: the SS 36 runs through the village from Milan via Lecco to Chiavenna, where there are continuations over the Malojapass into the Engadine and over the Splügenpass into the valley of the Hinterrhein ; the SS 38 is a continuation of the Westuferstraße (SS 340 and SS 340dir) which, coming from Como , accompanies Lake Como. The SS 38 leads from Colico through Valtellina via Sondrio and Bormio to the Stilfser Joch and from there down to Merano and Bozen in South Tyrol .
  • There are regular boat connections to Como across the lake , with normal scheduled boats and the faster catamaran.
