Nicolae Țaga (born April 12, 1967 in Avrămeşti , Harghita County ) is a former Romanian rower who won two Olympic medals.

Athletic career

The 1.92 m tall Nicolae Țaga took fourth place at the 1990 World Championships together with Marian Voinoiu in a pair without a helmsman . The following year he also reached fourth place with eighth at the 1991 World Championships . At the Olympic Games in Barcelona in 1992 Țaga competed in two boat classes. On August 1, Iulică Ruican , Viorel Talapan , Dimitrie Popescu , Nicolae Țaga and helmsman Dumitru Răducanu won in a four, on August 2, Popescu, Țaga and Răducanu won bronze in a two behind the British and the Italians.

Also at the world championships in 1993 Țaga started in two boat classes: He finished fourth in the single and won the world championship title in the four together with Dorin Alupei , Iulică Ruican, Viorel Talapan and helmsman Marin Gheorghe . At the 1994 World Championships , Țaga only competed with the one and finished ninth. In the following year, Țaga started again in two boat classes at the World Championships in Tampere : He took fifth place with eighth and eleventh place in two without a helmsman. With the Romanian eighth, Țaga finished seventh at the 1996 Olympic Games in Atlanta . Shortly thereafter, he rowed in a controlled two-man together with Dimitrie Popescu and Dumitru Răducanu to second place behind the French at the 1996 World Championships .

After a weak 1997 season, Țaga returned to eighth in 1998 and won the bronze medal in this boat class at the 1998 World Championships . 1999 in Canada Țaga won bronze in the no longer Olympic boat class four with helmsman. He also competed in the four without a helmsman , but only finished eighth in this boat class. Together with Daniel Măstăcan and helmsman Marin Gheorge, Țaga won silver behind the US boat at the 2000 World Championships . Țaga remained active until 2004, but never reached a grand finale.
