Bahne Rabe (born August 7, 1963 in Hamburg , † August 5, 2001 in Kiel ) was a German rowing athlete . As a batsman in the Germany eight he won the gold medal at the 1988 Olympic Games in Seoul , and in 1991 he was world champion in the four with helmsman .

Athletic career

After winning the senior's match , the unofficial U23 world championships, in a two-man without a helmsman in 1983 , Rabe moved from his hometown of Lüneburg to the Dortmund Federal Training Center in 1984 . There he was trained from 1986 by Ralf Holtmeyer , who brought him into the Germany eight . After two sixth places at the World Championships in 1986 and 1987, Rabe moved to the eighth position for the first time in the following year for the Olympic Games in Seoul . Together with Thomas Möllenkamp , Matthias Mellinghaus , Eckhardt Schultz , Ansgar Wessling , Armin Eichholz , Thomas Domian , Wolfgang Maennig and helmsman Manfred Klein , Rabe won the gold medal. He then temporarily ended his career.

By the time Rabe returned to competitive sport, Roland Baar had successfully taken over the field in the Germany eight. At the 1991 World Championships , Rabe started with Eichholz, Armin Weyrauch and Matthias Ungemach in a four-man team . Controlled by Jörg Dederding , the quartet won the gold medal in a new world record , which was not beaten again in this boat class (which has not been held at the Olympic Games and World Championships since 1996 and 2008). In the following year Rabe was again a member of the Germany eight , which won "bronze" in Barcelona and then gave up competitive sport again.

For his sporting successes he was awarded the Silver Laurel Leaf on June 23, 1993 .

In 1995 Rabe returned to competitive sports and finished sixth at the world championships in four-man without a helmsman. He then finally ended his sports career.

Rabe died of pneumonia that he could n't get over because of his anorexia .
