Karl-Heinz Hopp

Karl-Heinz Hopp (born November 20, 1936 in Allenstein , East Prussia , † February 11, 2007 in Palingen ) was a German rower and modern pentathlete .

Life

Hopp started rowing as a student at the Katharineum in Lübeck . As a law student at the Christian-Albrechts-Universität zu Kiel , he was active under coach Karl Wiepcke at ATV Ditmarsia Kiel .

Hopp won the European championship in a four without a helmsman together with Hans Lenk , Manfred Rulffs and Kraft Schepke at the European Championship in Poznan in 1958 . For this he was awarded the silver bay leaf on January 31, 1959 .

At the 1960 Summer Olympics in Rome , Hopp won the gold medal as a member of the Germany eight under the “rowing professor” Karl Adam . In the line-up of Hans Lenk , Klaus Bittner , Karl-Heinrich von Groddeck , Kraft Schepke , Frank Schepke , Walter Schröder , Manfred Rulffs (as batsman ) and helmsman Willi Padge , the eight drove together for three years and remained undefeated at major events.

After his successful rowing career (6 times DM; 3 times EM; 1 time OS and 2 times silver laurel), Hopp tried his hand at other sports such as fencing, shooting, swimming, riding and modern pentathlon as a talented athlete, and found his way through studying law about equestrian sport to his later profession as a veterinarian. In 1962, Hopp began studying veterinary medicine .

At the 1964 Summer Olympics in Tokyo , the passionate rider was part of the German line-up of modern pentathletes .

After his active sports career, Hopp worked as a veterinarian in Hamburg . In 1992, Hopp bought a riding stable in Palingen, Mecklenburg . There he died on February 11, 2007, just a few weeks after Manfred Rulffs , with whom he became Olympic champion in 1960.
